Hack description

This patch will convert Donkey Kong Land 2 from a monochrome Game Boy game to a Game Boy Color game. With this, the entire Donkey Kong Land series is now in color! In addition, two new options can be accessed by pressing Select on the overworld: Follower Kong and New Kiddy Mode. Follower Kong attempts to recreate the system from the SNES games where the Kong you are not currently playing as will follow behind you, while New Kiddy Mode is an easy mode where Kiddy Kong functions as an extra hit.

In addition to these, a custom rain effect based on the one used in Donkey Kong Land III will be used on the levels Topsail Trouble and Kreepy Krow. A sound test can be accessed by pressing Select at Klubba's Kiosk that will play songs from Donkey Kong Land 2, Donkey Kong Land III, and Conker's Pocket Tales.

For full information on known bugs and more detailed information on the added features, please check the included readme.

The extra options are the only things that save this hackMichalGrodal2024-01-14Version 1.2

First, the positives. New Kiddy Mode is fine, I suppose. It does make the game easier, but Donkey Kong Land 2 is hard enough so that it's serviceable. Follower Kong quite surprised me. I didn't think the GBC would be able to handle it, but it did, with minor flickering. Now, the negatives. The colorization, what the hack's main focus is about, completely fails at almost every turn. The title screen looks very nice, and so does the save file screen, but that's where it ends. The "colorization" is hard to describe, it looks like as if you put an original DKL 2 cartridge in your GBC with 4 more colors. For those who don't know, the GBC would give a few colors to the game you were playing, and while it wasn't a DX hack, it was serviceable. This is what the game looks like, claiming that it's a "colorization" hack, but the GBC will just do it for free. The game looks awful in some spots, such as the first fight against Krow and the world map. Again, the new modes are good, and I would technically recommend it for those, but if you want a colorization, just avoid.

Even better than the first DKL DX hackSupergamerguy2022-08-03Version 1.2

A lot of what I said about Donkey Kong Land 1 DX applies to this hack as well. The author managed to once again make this game actually playable in modern day. Color palettes are well-designed, so players should have no trouble distinguishing foreground elements from background elements anymore.

I want to highlight the new modes too, specifically Follower Mode. It might be just a cosmetic change, but Follower Mode makes this game so much better. Having a second playable character visible at all times onscreen gives your playthrough a sense of adventure and purpose to it, bringing it more in-line with its SNES source material. Kiddy Kong Mode is awesome too, making some of the rougher, more difficult parts of the game easier to overcome.

All in all, another outstanding project from SpecialAgentApe. Never play the original game again!

One of the best GameBoy games has made it's way into a full color! I still can't believe the fact that I don't need to stare at the monochrome mess anymore or a preset pretending to be a "color". Cheers to the creator!
