Battle Chip Challenge always felt like someone had an interesting idea for a battle mechanic. Attacks (chips) having their own HP, with certain attacks able to damage your opponent's chip HP. But they weren't given enough time to properly flesh out a battle system this idea would need. And how they would balance out the player just selecting the same attacks over and over again. So the just took control away from the player and made it randomized. I can't say how this patch affects late game balance, but it feels a lot more 'right' and what one would normally expect from a game.

After playing some hours I can definitely assure you this should have been part of the base game, it adds much more strategy and removes most part of unfair rng, I recommend it!

I have no idea what Capcom devs were thinking with Battle Chip Challenge. The player has very little capacity to alter the outcome of a battle outside of using overpowered chips on every possible data traces so that, no matter what kind of stupidity the A.I pulls, the player gets the advantage. That said, when a chip is used up, the space it was occupying empties, but the A.I could still choose an empty data rail and waste a turn. That's not fun at all, and just try to imagine how much grinding it would take to even get to the status I described above, meaning, until then, the vanilla game is even less fun. What this patch does is allowing the player to actually choose the chips that go on the data traces freely, making it much closer to what MMBN should be. Think of this as a battle royale of sorts. Absolutely necessary.
