Hack description

This hack modernizes the control scheme of Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge to make it less frustrating to people used to tighter controls by giving the player more control while jumping.

Complete list of changes:
- Belmont can now turn around and stop in mid-air.
- Belmont regains control during knockback.
- (optional) V-Cancel: when the jump button is released, Belmont immediately starts falling again; this allows the player to make smaller hops if desired. (There's also a "vcancel-only" patch which provides only this change and none of the others.)
- (optional) Inertia: when adjusting velocity in mid-air, Belmont only accelerates slowly (rather than changing direction instantaneously).

Similar to the Castlevania Improved Controls hack here, or the Castlevania: The Adventure Improved Controls hack here.

Compatible with the Subweapons patch located here.

Also compatible with the Speed hack located here.

You can use Lunar IPS to apply the hack to your Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge ROM file.

Well implemented and feels naturaldrcouzelis2022-08-04Version 1.0

This romhack was very well executed. The new mechanics feel as if they've been part of the game the whole time. The player can now completely control vertical and horizontal movement in mid-air. And the new gameplay settings are easily configurable when you apply the romhack.

Getting hurt no longer knocks the player backwards, potentially to their death. This removes a lot of the frustrations when playing the game. Even something as simple as "run away from a bat, jump into the air, then quickly turn around and whip it" is now possible.

Do I recommend this romhack? Yes, but with a conditional... I love the original Castlevania II Game Boy game. In my opinion, every enemy in every level was expertly crafted and designed for the original gameplay the player was given. But I fully recognize that the traditional controls are not enjoyable to everyone, and in fact are very frustrating at times.

So if you are unable to enjoy this game because of the traditional controls, then I highly recommend trying out this romhack. It still provides a complete challenge, but it's now the type of challenge that I think many players are used to and would prefer in general.

Thank you for making it!
