Hack description

This is a complete reworking of Game Boy Tetris into an original game called "Threetris". This is similar to the version released for NES last year. The pieces have been refined even more and it ends up being very fun.

All game modes, even 2 player, have been tested.

This mod is for the more common 1.1 version of Gameboy Tetris.

----

There are 3 additional patches for converting other mods to Threetris.

"Threetris - Cleaner Graphics" is a port of thirtythree's Cleaner Graphics mod. (You can use this on a default 1.1 Gambeboy Tetris OR on an already patched Tetris - Cleaner Graphics.)

"Threetris - Classic Hard Drop" is specifically for Ospin's Classic Hard Drop mod. (Use this patch second, on the already patched Tetris - Hard Drop.)

"Threetris - Rosy Retrospection" is specifically for Ospin's awesome mod. (Use this patch second, on the already patched Tetris - Rosy Retrospection.) [The ability to Pause had to be disabled because of the routine Ospin uses relative to how Start & Select work with the HOLD feature. That routine was failing during pause because of the Threetris piece shapes, so pause was simply disabled. Disabling pause makes everything still work perfectly. You should still be able to pause using whatever device you are playing this on, except for original hardware.]

Very fun and surprisingly differentdrcouzelis2022-10-13Version 1.0

I was pretty skeptical when I saw this romhack. How can you change a critical element (four pieces per block) to the best game ever made and not have it be an unbalanced, mess? Well, this game really surprised me with how good it is!

Three things surprised me. I was surprised at how different the game feels. I mean, it's still blocks falling from the ceiling. But I never realized how much using the original tetrominos caused me to make specific strategies, and all of those strategies get thrown out the window now that the pieces are made of only three blocks. It looks so familiar but plays so different.

Next, I was surprised at how fun it is. I guess it shouldn't surprise me, I mean it is still Tetris at heart.

Last, it surprised me at how complete the game feels. It doesn't feel like a half baked idea, or that something is missing from the game (like, you know, a fourth piece in every block). Instead, this feels like it easily could've been an official release, and in my opinion even better than some official releases of Tetris.

I don't really have anything bad to say about this game. But it's funny, I never realized how passionate I can feel towards INANIMATE BLOCKS in a video game. I found myself really missing the square block from the original game. And let me just say I HATE THAT STUPID DIAGONAL PIECE. Oh, you'll know it when you see it.

I recorded video of gameplay here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOOBhbs_3m0

This hack passed the 'How much time have I spent on this already?' question. I like Tetris games on the original Game Boy, and this is a good hack. The only thing I can say bad about it is that I don't like the three piece angled piece. It is probably just how I normally play Tetris, and this plays a bit different. All in all I would recommend this to anyone wanting a different kind of Tetris experience.
