Hack description

Following the success of JonataGuitar's Aria of Sorrow recolor, comes the Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance Recolor by both JonataGuiter and sorrow!

A "basic" hack for Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance that aims to overhaul the visuals of the game, creating a much more enjoyable for a fresh playthrough, as well as being easier on the eyes.

*ALL of the games pallettes (Backgrounds, Animations, Characters, and Enemies) have been recolored by JonataGuitar.

*All of the animation sequence palettes are not easily found in DSVEdit and were found by sorrow and given to JonataGuitar to complete the broken areas.

*Various area tilesets were fixed by sorrow to accomodate the new colors properly.

*Final Boss Battles were tweaked by sorrow to take place in Dracula's Throne Room (from Boss Rush Mode) before transitioning to the Psychedelic area for the "Brain Fight."

QUICK NOTE

These patches are meant to recolor the palettes ONLY. There is NO guarantee they will work with other patches.

Future Plans

*Different versions of the recolor.

*Compatibility for HoD Revenge of the Findesiecle Deluxe+ hack.

Did what Konami should've done.pandaboi2712023-08-06Version 1.0

Actually made me interested in checking this game out. Thanks a lot for the hard work, you literally fixed one of the most egregious issues with the original game.

Makes a drastic difference!vic_viper_0012022-09-17Version 1.0

This game has always looked pretty bad on anything that isn't an original GBA. The oversaturated colors look humorously bad when viewed on the average TV or monitor, and certain areas of the game can only be described as fluorescent.

Playing with this recolor totally changes the game's atmosphere for the better. Now the environments actually ARE dark, gritty, creepy, and foreboding. Y'know... just like you'd expect from a game featuring Dracula and his forces. The final boss fight which originally looked totally groovy, colorful, and psychedelic, actually feels dark and imposing now!

The only suggestion I would make for improving this hack, would be to disable the rapidly-flashing weapon-heart-counter, since it too isn't really necessary on modern screens. It has actually gotten temporarily burnt into my own screen!

Much like JonataGuitar's Aria recolour, this hack is truly transformative. I simply cannot believe that such a radical improvement was achieved via just tweaking the palettes. Terrible music aside, Harmony has some real atmosphere now, and I truly believe JonataGuitar's recolours bring the GBA Castlevania's visuals very close to Symphony's quality (maybe not technically, but definitely artistically).

This recolour specifically deserves more praise due to the base game it's modifying. The Aria recolour was beautiful, yes, but Aria didn't look particularly bad to begin with, just very washed out. Harmony, on the other hand, is a very different story. The base game looks very rough. Colour palettes run the range from garish to murky to downright mismatching. And that's to say nothing of that god forsaken blue outline. This recolour is damn near essential if you're in the business of looking at this game for more then 5 minutes at a time.

The only (sorta) complaint I have is that they could have gone a little further in improving one area; Juste's animations. I understand that these hacks are purely for fixing the palettes and that reanimating sprites are likely outside the scope of the project, but Juste's awful animations are the one remaining stain on this game. His walking and jumping sprites are extremely awkward looking, an it really stands out in a series of great looking walk animations. Like I said, I don't really expect JonataGuitar to improve this because he's already done enough great work, but it would be brilliant if someone were to iron out this last visual hiccup.

Alright, enough complaining. This recolour is fantastic and takes the game from visual vomit to astounding beauty. I can't wait for when he (hopefully) does Circle of the Moon. That game arguably needs an upgrade the most. Until then, keep up the good work JonataGuitar.

EDIT: Ok so turns out there is indeed plans to not only fix Juste's animations, but also to improve the game's music as well. I retract that one complaint, and I also commend these hackers for their tireless work to elevate HoD to the level of the other Castlevanias.

Thorough improvement all aroundshino12022-09-11Version 1.0

I can't say I'm a huge fan of the Aria recolor - I think Aria has colors that can be a bit bright, but are well balanced and used. I can't say the same about Harmony. It honestly feels as if the change to brighter colors came late into the development, because colors in CoH look downright gaudy. Sure, they were meant to be viewed desaturated and darker on the terrible GBA screen - which is where this hack comes in, because that's pretty much all it does, make the colors darker and less saturated. The colors look less gaudy and as a result they look better, and they atmosphere takes a huge boost - the game finally feels like Castlevania, which is especially notable as this is supposed to take place soon after original Castlevania, and Juste is Simon's grandson.

I never finished Harmony playing with original colors, because they genuinely put me off, but this is actually really good. This hack is amazing and hopefully will mean a lot of people who previously wouldn't give Harmony a chance will play this underrated hidden gem.

Impressive work!unksoldier552022-09-06Version 1.0

This is a REALLY GOOD work! I love all the new atmosphere of this hack, it feels ancient and dark, just what a Castlevania game needs to be. For me it would be the perfect recolor hack, it has a much better feel than the original, but my only suggestion is that it may be compatible with multi-language translation patches for a future version release.

Amazing hack that feels like a genuine remasterPixelCherryNinja2022-09-03Version 1.0

After CotM dark colour palette, HoD and AoS were made with lighter colours which made the game easier to play on unlit screens. Now that we are all playing these games on backlit screens and IPS modded gameboys, I feel this recolour brings this game up a few notches. Definitely check it out if wanna revisit the game or it's just your first time playing it. A must have if you plan to play/replay HoDnatsume_ronin2022-09-01Version 1.0

Despite the GBA being my favourite console, the Castlevania games are some of the few games I steered cleared of, mostly due in no small part to their ugly palletes.

Jonata's recolour hack for Aria of Sorrow literally changed the game for me, and after finishing AoS I've been eagerly awaiting the release of this hack so that I can finally start HoD. And so far I've been thoroughly enjoying the game, which I highly doubt I would've without this hack. The game looks fantastic on a modded GBA!

Enough waffling. This hack elevates the mood and feel of the game and gives it a darker, grimier, more gothic visual style. You like your Castlevanias with a darker look? Then look no further, this is the hack for you; 10/10 would recommend! Now if only we had a proper remaster of the music...

Now I can finally get into this game...Googie2022-08-31Version 1.0

The colors make a big difference in this game, to me it's got that gritty Castlevania feel to it, and I like it a lot. Everyone who's a fan of HOD should give this a spin.

This hack works with the Music Overhaul hack.

Make sure you patch this hack first, then patch the music overhaul for a cool experience.

I highly recommend this hack.

Effectively gives Dissonance a new lookAceearly19932022-08-27Version 1.0

It's certainly a good thing to see another take on the recolor of Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance, but there're several areas that looks wrong in color depth choice, which leads to too heavy use of brown-ish yellow/red colors; especially in 1- the 2x2 room located near the save point towards final battle, at Treasury area in Castle B and 2- the vertical room located just near the upper warp point of Castle Entrance in Castle B. I don't know if it's a "my thing" but the color depth choice of these areas always looks weird in my view. The color choice of enemies are mostly appropriate, but with a few exceptions. The "Bronze Guarder" giant knight enemy, for example, is now reddish, looks nothing Bronze-made but rather Copper-made or Copper-painted. With these imperfection spots I cannot say the color depth choice in this take wins over the another recolor patch that Pemburu Vampir created a relatively long time ago. Onthe other hand, colors depth choice of Marble Gallery in Castle A, Castle Entrance in Castle A, Shrine of the Apostates in Castle B, and Boss Rush area are super good though. I instantly fell in love with the new color choices in these areas.

The change of final battle room in Castle Center is a neat highlight, this take is interesting as the addition of platforms offer changes of boss strategy for the final bosses. I wish there's a separate patch that individually applies this change alone to either the clean, unmodifed game or Revenge of the Findesiecle Deluxe+. .

In conclusion, this recolor hack is a neat choice if anyone wants a more eye-pleasing Harmony of Dissonance experience, with the change of final boss room showing a lot of potential for future hacks. The GBA hacking scene never disappointed me after all!
