Hack description

This hack makes Super Mario World better by fixing bugs and making additions that should have been there from the start.

CHANGELOG
1.1
*Now in BPS format
*Added an ALT version that doesn't have the SMB4 subtitle, has the copyright read 1990 AND 1991 and has the final text read "YOU'RE A SUPER PLAYER !!"

Graphics changes:

*Title screen has the SMB4 subtitle
*MUCH better fonts
*Luigi has his revised sprite
*Added Piranha Plants to inaccessible places of the main map
*"YOU ARE SUPER PLAYER !!" is now "オマエ ハ SUPER PLAYER !!" and the coins have the colours of the four "!" blocks. Furthermore, the floor beneath is now "!" blocks of all colours.
*Switch palaces have unique colours
*Rotary bonus game has new colours
*Game over screen has a rotating Mario (or Luigi) falling to his demise

Difficulty changes

*Skipping stages by going under the floor has been remediated
*Yoshi's Island 2 now has a pit beneath the final coin challenge
*Added munchers to Yoshi's Island 1's pipe sub area
*Revamped the Boo fight
*Now, the 8 rooms of the final castle are connected. No more choosing which one to play.
*Removed one key element from each SPECIAL level so as to make them more challenging, with varying degrees of success

Bug fixes

*Eating P-switch after pressing it fixed
*Magikoopa has correct colours
*Mushroom no longer replaces cape or flower in item box

Bonus changes

*Fish bob up and down
*Reduced slowdown by using Lunar Magic's FastROM mapping. (SA1 breaks compatibility with copiers, flash carts and repros)
*Title screen now displays percentage instead of exits. No more 96 (that was always so weird)
*Added innacurate emulator detection (just warns you about it)
*Added some classic Piranha Plants, just to show them off

The patches make the game Japanese versionZeikar2024-07-23Version 1.1

The patches make the game Japanese with none of the changes listed. Perhaps I have the wrong ROM, but I'd think it wouldn't even load then. I'm sure I had this exact problem maybe a year ago and not even other sourced roms patched correctly. So right now I have to give this crap a big NO. If someone can help me that would be nice.

Not an ultimate version by any meansLigeia2022-10-16Version 1.1

Doing a "redux" type hack is a great idea. But this hack goes so overboard with the unnecessary random changes that it can't possibly pass off as an "ultimate" version that could have been officialy released.

Good ideas that go towards creating a version that could be ultimate :

  • SMB4 subtitle
  • updated Luigi sprite
  • Mushroom no longer replacing cape or flower in item box
  • Reduced slowdown

Meh :

  • Title screen displaying percentage : it would be nice for SMW hacks, but for the original game I don't see the point, I think anyone into the hacking scene knows SMW has 96 exits.
  • 8 rooms of the final castle connected : why not, it doesn't feel necessary to me, but I guess it can be argued it makes the final stage feel more epic and more of a challenge.

Everything else falls into the bad/arbitrary/random changes category, but here are my main points :

  • "better" fonts : I fail to see how they are any better than vanilla
  • "Super player" coin change : what's the point ? Why change this ?
  • difficulty changes : SMW is a masterclass on difficulty curve, teaching new players the basics before throwing more difficult traps at them. Arbitrary making early level more difficult shows a total lack of understanding of the game design philosophy and proves the hacker just changed stuff for the sake of change, without knowing what they were doing.
  • Some bug/oversights fixes are completely unnecessary, like the skipping stages by going under the floor thing. Why "fix" something that is not detrimental to the player ? Such things are part of the fun factor and replayability of SMW. Once again, "fixing" this shows no real understanding of what made this game special.

Ideas of what could improve the hack :

  • letting the player choose between Mario & Luigi upon starting the game
  • implementing a Yoshi coin board to keep track of which nes you got, like on the GBA version

As it is now I don't recommend the hack.
