Hack description

Rockman Mega World (aka Mega Man: The Wily Wars) is a splendid compilation of the first three games in the series, redone with 16-bit graphics and sound for the Sega 16-bit consoles.  It's a very faithful recreation in a lot of ways, too.  However, there are some inconsistencies between the original games and the Sega remakes that lead to a less-than-ideal gameplay experience.  This ROM hack is here to fix some of the lesser flaws that add up.

* Enemy invulnerability time has been all but eliminated.  This means that enemies can take damage more frequently and reliably.  No more "missed" shots!
* The default weapon (the Buster) has been sped up to match its 8-bit counterpart.  Watch those lemons fly!
* The default weapon and some boss weapons can be fired more rapidly!  Hammer that "fire" button and launch waves of projectiles!
* Rockman pulls his Buster back a little sooner after firing!  This... only affects a handful of weapons and the change isn't that big, but hey!  It might help!

These changes make the game play a tiny bit closer to its 8-bit counterparts which leads to a smoother gameplay experience, overall.  Give it a try!  You might notice a pretty big difference.

v1.0.5 Update
* The SRAM patches by an unknown author (J), MottZilla (E), and Plombo (U) have been added to the base hack. This makes the saves more compatible across the board and helps the game run on more emulators / hardware.

Reviews

Works great on emulators, does not work on MiSTerMETR0lD2024-05-14Version 1.0.5

This patch absolutely fixes the gameplay issues with the original version of the game! The slow "lemon" speed was always my biggest issue with The Wily Wars. It just never felt right. Also making the robot masters vulnerable more quickly between each hit also makes it more in line with the originals as was intended in the NES versions.

Unfortunately, the saving does not work on MiSTer though, since the SRAM patch does not work on the new Mega Drive core. It does save without the SRAM patch though, so having an optional version of the patch that does not add the SRAM functionality would be amazing!

A snappier, more lethal Mega Man+RyeGuy+2022-11-01Version 1.0.1

After patching this improvement on top of the "Mega Man Wily Wars SRAM+ Proto Man Size Fix" and "Wily Tower Always Available" patches, (using FixCecksum after each patch) I am very excited about Mega Man on the Mega Drive. The Fixer Upper patch makes Mega Man move like a Contra Hard Corps commando. He feels snappier and more lethal. The Blue Bomber just graduated to 16 bit.

This ROM Hack is just what this game could use.Candra Software2022-11-01Version 1.0.3

As with another player, I can confirm that this can be patched over the Save RAM + Proto Man Fix on a European ROM.

The slower fire rate in the Wily Wars version of the games, which makes the NES games more like the Gameboy games always bugged me. For a long time, I was hoping for a ROM Hack that corrects such an inconsistency with the original versions.

Regular enemies having invincibility frames? I didn't notice it at first glance, but upon finding out about it I question why they have them, even if it's just a few frames.
