Hack description

Squitter's Spider Quest - A ROM Hack of Donkey Kong Country 2

Every level is now played with Squitter!

Levels have had their objects rearranged to make sure Squitter can get through them safely.

Parrot Chute Panic and Chain Link Chamber have been skipped for really bad camera bugs (you can still get to their bonuses and DK coins).

Thanks to my friend Kay for playtesting the game! (@FleetwayMS04 on Twitter)

Thanks to Mattrizzle (creator of DKC2 Brigand Barrage) to link me to compression tools and title screen addresses!

I very much recommend making platform webs when jumping using L+R to instantly stop them.

Great concept. Needs work.Michael Dyrocc2024-06-23Version 1.1

This was fun to play for the first two worlds. I was disappointed that I couldn't fight the first boss as Squitter but I understood why at the second boss fight. At the beginning of second boss you are transformed into Squitter and if you don't immediately spam Y afterwards to attack the boss, you risk the game hard locking if the boss is damaged after that point.

The third world was playable as Squitter as much as the first two were with the exception of Bramble Blast which didn't really have objects moved around enough for Squitter to web sling through. The barrels ended up sucking the player in forcing normal gameplay.

The fourth world is where the trouble started. The rail car levels are not beatable without riding the skull car which turns Squitter into a who ever is the lead Kong with clown puke color palette. Rambi's Rumble is broken due to the hack, but in a good way as the giant bee passes above you allowing you to take your time with that section of the level.

The fifth world forced me to use cheats as again the rail level wasn't beatable by simple web singling all the way to the right with Squitter, I had to use cheats to get on the skull car that was blocked by red bees. The boss of world 5 also needed to be shot quickly like the world 2 boss to avoid a hard lock. The windy stage was harder than normal with Squitter.

World six is where my non lost world gameplay ended. The game just crashed after Castle Crush. I do admit to using the Bonus Krem Coin dev cheat found in level one to get all 75 Krem Coins as I quickly found out most of the bonus stages were either too hard or impossible with Squitter, unless the bonus stage was originally designed for him.

Lost world was okay. The first stage of it almost crashed. Enemies weren't loading until you nearly got right on top of their spawn points. Sometimes you couldn't shoot webs to attack or build platforms. Whole objects just vanished while on screen. I think it was due to a sprite overload occurring. The second - third stages were playable/ The fourth was almost impossible with Squitter again due to the wind mechanic and what looked like no objects were moved. Off screen invincibility barrels were present but were easy to miss. The lost world boss played as normal.

TLDR summary... nice concept but way more editing and testing needs to be done to make this better! I'm willing to help test if the dev needs more testers or wants to improve this as I see great potential here.

Edit: Forget the testing offer. I noticed that the only update, coincidentally occurred the day this review was published, was only to specify that is game was for a no headered rom. While that may fix the crashing problem, that doesn't justify the severely limited changes to the game. Still not recommended.

One of the best parts of DK2 was the stages where you got to play as Squitter. This game makes it so you only play as Squitter and it is fun. It makes you play completely different than you usually would. I really love Squitter. After a short time I started to realize that only playing as Squitter can be boring, but that is not the point. This is a title that you would want to pick up and play from time to time. You probably wouldn't want to play through this for 2-3 hours, but playing this once every couple weeks for an hour or less at a time is fun. This is great for any Donkey Kong fans. Highly Recommended!
