Hack description

This MMC3-based freeplay hack let's the player choose between Super Mario Bros. and Super Wario Bros.

NOTE: Levels are completely untouched and can be freely selectable by the respective button!

NOTE 2: Mario, Luigi, Wario and Waluigi have separated fiery palettes!

NOTE 3: The ending text has been rewritten!

Features of Super Wario Bros.:

* Can be selectable if the player pushes the Down button on the title screen (if Down is pushed again, it changes back to Super Mario Bros.)
* Game is in hard mode
* The player is not able to use A + Start
* Worlds can be selected by pressing A
* The musics and the sound effects are gloomy and sour
* The bonus room's cloud has evil smile
* The palette of the level styles and their background colors are darker and different

Super Wario Bros. seems like just a coat of paint at first, but it is masterfully done. What drew me in to this hack in the first place was that salmon sky, and what followed was a beautifully dark aesthetic with music to match. Some objects are just a slightly darker color - the green pipes and castle being the biggest examples - and this makes such a huge difference. The black pipes in World 3 pushed this even further; I love what's been done here. The music seems like it's just in a minor key, which again, works very well.

I really enjoyed this one. I liked the simplicity of being able to choose between vanilla SMB1 or Wario Bros. by simply hitting down on the d-pad and I liked the alterations to the palette, music and dialogue. Not super fancy, but it doesn't always need to be. Enjoyed this one quite a bit.
