Wonderful ColorizationMother Kojiro2023-08-24Version 1.02

This colorizes the game, as advertised, but the strength of this kind of hack lies in its palette choices. This is one of my least favorite games in the Mega Man Classic series, so it's not one I'm eager to revisit, but I quickly made an exception for this. What doesn't look great is beautiful, at least when it comes to environments. This doesn't just try to look more like the NES version, but goes in its own direction, much like the base game does. I loved the orange skies of Elec Man's stage, the seafoam interiors and soft twilight skies of Ice Man's stage, and the warm grays of Fire Man's stage especially. Mega Man looks great, too, and weapon colors have been implemented, which I didn't expect. Some of the enemies look a little cheesy, but that's because the base sprites just don't have as much detail, so it didn't allow for enough color depth to match everything else; it's not bad, and it's a limitation of the original game, so it's not a deal-breaker. I'd love to see more of these for this hacker, who clearly has a great eye for color.

Excellent color conversion!LiquidMarble2023-02-02Version 1.02

After the greatly anticipated and fantastic Mega Man V GBC hack, this game receiving the same treatment was a very welcome surprise.

Pros:

  • Pleasing and detailed colors for characters and stages
  • Impressive palette changing effects
  • Enker looks superb even though he wasn't designed with NES color limitations
  • Slowdown is basically gone

Cons:

  • Some things might look better using Mega Man's face palette like electricity or enemy hurt flashing but I don't know the technical constraints like the author does
  • Wily is pantsless and I don't like it

A very impressive effort for a game lost to timeSupergamerguy2023-02-02Version 1.02

Thanks to this hack, Dr. Wily's Revenge looks just like one of the NES titles! Just as the remixed stages parallel their NES source material, the use of color in this hack does the same, converting some palettes perfectly from Mega Man 1 and 2, while "remixing" some color choices for enemies and hazards to (finally) give Dr. Wily's Revenge its own identity. This also helps players distinguish backgrounds from hazards in the foreground in ways the monochrome original couldn't handle. Cutscenes were especially impressive, showcasing several detailed sprites at once, all with fitting color sets. I also noticed significantly less slowdown than in the Gameboy original.

This hack is a must-play for anybody looking to revisit Dr. Wily's Revenge. Leave the vanilla game buried in the past where it belongs.

The rebirth of a classicBrand.Newman2023-01-28Version 1.01

Being a kid in the 90's, there wasn't gonna be any holiday when I wouldn't be bringing my Game Boy with me, and this game was always packed with it.

This patch brings the first episode of the series on the portable console to a brand new level, and even adds some new things, such as unique icons for each weapon.

The colours seem to come from an official release, and were obviously thought very much through (some would criticize the choice of purple for Elecman, but you can never satisfy everybody when it comes down to personal tastes).

In any case, this is a great way of (re)discovering the game, adds a lot more of visibility, less slowdowns, and should be tried by any Megaman fan out there!

Thank you so much for your work!

A great way to start the year 20XX!i5rael.lp2023-01-27Version 1.0

What more can we ask? It's an amazing hack bringing Mega Man I to color and rename it as "Mega Man World" (the Japanese version was called "Rock Man World") and I freaking love it! I hope the work done with this hack and MMV (or Mega Man World V) inspire mi high quality DX patches for the other 3 games. Now, go play!

All the colors seem right on as they should be. This hack really breathes life into an old favorite!

Capcom isn't going to do it, so somebody had toBlairBear862023-01-27Version 1.01

It's awesome seeing fans breathe color into these classic Mega Man GB titles. Colorizing a game makes a big difference and for me, it tends to feel like a new game. I forgot how difficult this game was but it was nice to revisit again.

Sure, it's not perfect, but it was definitely enjoyable. Great work :)

Absolutely recommendedSprite:D2023-01-27Version 1.01

After completely playing through this hack, I can say that it's a definite recommendation. I personally like the new color palettes to the stages as I am not a big fan of the earlier NES games and I love how detailed some bosses like Enker and the Wily Machine look.

I do think that it's unfortunate to not have weapon icons on the pause menu, but having them show up on the HUD and having Mega Man's palette change is good enough for me. Great job!

Could use some work.forple2023-01-26Version 1.0

I think a lot of people would be surprised by this review, like, come on! This should be the definitive experience!

Unfortunately, to keep this review short-ish, It's not, personally. I think this hack could be the definitive version of the first Megaman World, but sadly I don't think it can be just yet. The coloring is a bit weird at times, and quite personally I think a lot of the stage palettes don't fit or make much sense, like Elecman's palette (why is it purple?) or what Cutman's stage is doing. The enemy palettes are fine for the most part, but it's weird how things like Elecman's stage hazards are an oddly colored blue, or the Mets are a skin color instead of Yellow. I also noticed that the weapon colors for Rolling Cutter and Thunder Beam are basically identical.

Perhaps the most striking oversight to me was during the ending cutscene; Mega Man's darker blue is used just for shading; so even the "pants" he wears during that cutscene are the lighter blue like the rest of him!

But not all is bad. The weapon icons are a nice touch (although they are missing from the actual pause menu), and the fact it also works in Wily's Toolbox without a hitch is something to applaud. It's also very nice the author considered that the LCD colors would look washed out on a real GBC's screen.

By the way, the game outright crashes when forced to boot on original DMG/Monochrome models. (For comparison, Mega Man World 5 DX has a "For GBC Only" screen).

However, as it stands I think this hack could use a bit more polish. The hack is nonetheless great, but I think the author could have spent some extra time fixing a good few oversights, and polishing it up a little. It may not be the definitive way to play this game, but it certainly is another reason to pick up and play this game! From that alone I had a blast revisiting the stages and seeing what my muscle memory retained after a decent bit of time!

Overall, I'd (personally) give it a 7/10. Acceptable, but could use a bit more work.

I wish I could do more than a flat "Yes" or "No" for the recommend segment. As if you want to play the definitive Mega Man World 1 experience, you might want to wait for an addendum patch. But if you're itching to replay the GB games again or are looking for an excuse to dump some time into another Mega Man game, then I would say it's worth checking out!

Not too bad, but lemme see...SuperStarFox2023-01-26Version 1.01

I played through the entire game and already enjoyed seeing everything in color for the first time. But while playing this, I had noticed some things that I wanna talk about:

1. All of the stages are colorized and some enemies are more detailed. Though I'm not much into all that purple used in Elec Man's stage.

2. Unlike the NES version, some of the enemies are detailed which I think looks good on them.

3. The fonts still remain the same as the original version though I wished they were replaced with the ones from the NES Mega Man games but they are what they are.

4. The pause menu isn't redesigned like World 5 DX's version making it hard for me to see what ability Mega Man needs to fight a Robot Master.

5. I really love the change on Mega Man's title screen. I think it's a lot better than the old one and best of all, it doesn't confuse anyone with the NES games anymore.

I always had trouble with the game because of how difficult it is, but thanks to this hack I can now beat the game and finally see what I missed through the first adventure. Thanks again Specialagentape for this colorized hack, you did a really great job with this.

This too makes up for the cancelled Anniversary Collection that we were supposed to get on GBA years ago but now, all of that is about to change for the better.

Again, from the bottom of my heart...... thank you.
