Just want to start this with the fact that since this appears to be your first, or one of your first hacks please take this criticism and learn from it. I'm not attacking you, there are some great ideas here they're just... very poorly implemented. First off, I didn't complete the hack. I got to 'Monstero' which I assume was meant to be Atlantis because Monstro himself was further up and Under the Sea was playing. The hack is beyond the point of unpolished and makes me wonder if it was even playtested due to the following issues. First off - the elephant in the room: the music. I had to mute my game because it was actually hurting my ears. Mario 64's soundfont is a fickle beast, you need to work hard with it instead of dumping in MIDIs as they are and expecting them to sound good. Many songs suffer with certain instruments being louder than they should be. Secondly - Star IDs, unobtainable Stars and why I think this wasn't tested. Several Stars share IDs with other Stars. This means if you collect them they won't count towards your total. This was ultimately why I quit playing too. I had found around 5 or so Stars with the Same IDs, 2 as a result of consistent softlocks were unobtainable and it left me with not enough faith that I would have enough Stars to finish the game. This also applied in part to Eyerock in Agrabah. Due to how you've placed it, Eyerock won't attack you making the fight impossible. Speaking of - softlocks and collision issues as well as textures painted on awkwardly and half-haphazardly. There's a lot, among the basic ground you walk, the walls, they're everywhere. Alice in Wonderland's 'Off With His Head' mission wasn't able to be completed as once I hit the warp the game just softlocked. I tried different plugins and none of them worked. The game softlocked too when I went into what I assume was the Tea Party Garden. Grammar, spelling and misplaced text boxes are the last negative I wanted to touch on. It doesn't help the whole experience when it's like this. If you're not confident perhaps have a friend proofread for you? There was also quite a few "you're smack bang in the middle of the battlefield" text boxes and in traverse town there were several that triggered sound affects like Koopa's Race Fanfare. Now, is this a bad idea as a whole? Not at all. You've got a great concept here. I just think you've bitten off a LOT more than you can chew with your current experience. If you choose to continue to learn and improve in Mario 64 ROMhacking I truly think you could revisit this and do it great justice. | |||
