Hack description

Super Mario Kart began development as a straight-forward go-kart racing game before switching directions and adding elements from the Mushroom Kingdom. Super Go-Kart Racing aims to "recreate" what the original intention of the game was. There are no weapons, coins or jumps. It's just no-frills racing across 20 brand-new tracks set in realistic go-kart race locations. All of the music and many of the sounds have been changed to create a different experience.

Game notes:
-A stripped-down version of battle mode called "Ball Battle" is included.
-The mini kart (press Y on the racer select screen) can be used in any mode and will not squish when bumping other racers.
-Although the hop has been removed, powersliding has not and is strongly suggested for sharp turns. Pro-tip: Press the Powerslide button without the D-pad to stop laterally skidding.
-A Mirror Mode version is also included with all the tracks flipped horizontally.

Version 1.1 changes:
-Removed weird color bronze and silver trophies from cup selection screen
-Fixed a few things that didn't mirror correctly in Mirror Mode
-Tweaked one track difficulty

Version 1.2 changes:
-Reworked last slalom section of Desert B
-Fixed missing track object in Mirror Mode
-Touched up some graphics and colors

Version 1.3 changes:
-Added tire tracks and tweaked difficulty on Stadium Lot A

Version 1.4 changes:
-Various graphical touch ups
-Fixed some graphics that didn't mirror correctly
-Tweaked one track difficulty

Version 1.5 changes:
-Fixed lap count glitch on two tracks
-Tweaked one track difficulty

Inspiring but with some issuesmatt!2023-03-21Version 1.1

This is such an inspiring hack, congrats to the developer.

I hope it's ok to give some constructive criticism: some of the graphics hand contrast issues (either too little or too much) and the new music is something I'd like to switch off.

This hack is a very interesting take on the ever-famous Mario Kart formula, removing an aspect that, in my opinion, always made the series impossible to be taken more seriously than just family couch mayhem: items.

Of special mention would be the dreaded blue shell, designed solely to punish those in the lead (though it hadn't been created by the time the original SMK hit store shelves just yet).

I fully realize such catch up mechanics were meant to just be a well-natured form of chaotic competitive balancing, but it did remove part of the skill ceiling the game could have promoted, despite being an arcade racer in essence.

What this hack does is creating just that - A purely skill based arcade racer on top of the SMK engine without any ties to the Super Mario Brothers IP, something that feels oddly refreshing to me when there has been so much Mario Kart as the years went by.

With new graphics, music and track layouts, this is sure to please people that would like to experience a new Mode 7 based racer on the beloved SNES.

This is probably the best Super Mario Kart hack out there. It is incredibly fun to zip around the tracks with the new drifting mechanics. The difficulty is just right and the new graphics and music are spectacular. I recommend any Mario Kart fan to play this amazing hack.
