Hack description

This is a patch for Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 that adjusts both the left and right movement check subroutine to force the game's quicker walking speed onto Wario's other forms, as opposed to being reserved for only his Invincible and Jet Wario forms. This also forces the faster walking animation speed for all of his forms to match the quicker walking speeds.

In addition to the above change, the breakable block code has been modified slightly so Wario's dash continues even when destroying a breakable block that's been
'cracked'. This change was made to more closely emulate how Wario's Shoulder Dash functions in the sequels, where his dash normally continues in a similar fashion.
This reduces the amount of B button spamming that needs to be done to clear out breakable blocks, without outright removing the 'cracked block' state.

Below are two videos demonstrating the faster walking speeds and the new breakable block functionality:

Credit to Kak2X for the original Wario Land disassembly. Without their work, this would have not been possible.

UPDATE (03/26/2023):

The 3rd (and hopefully final) release completely changes how the left and right subroutine checks are handled, as well as the breakable block code. The way it's done now is considerably more efficient, and now works with korxo's Color Edition patch!

Subtle, but superb.BLAZINOAH2024-01-25Version 3.0

A subtle but superb patch that adds a bit of increased pace and snap to already great gameplay. These adjustments really do optimize the gameplay experience on the go, to the point that even veteran Wario Land players such as myself are somewhat taken aback by just how much more responsive Wario is to control input. This patch really comes into its own though when spliced with korxo's excellent colorization hack, that put a welcome new spin on a timeless classic.

A great hack!MichalGrodal22023-03-28Version 2.0

Played through this hack, and it did what it was supposed to. It made Wario faster, and control better. I didn't think it was possible due to the limitations of the Gameboy, but hey, it was done. Thanks. I also appreciate the DX hack. I would recommend this hack to anyone wanting to play Wario Land 1.

Just what the game neededpocket2023-03-13Version 2.0

I've always had trouble getting into the Wario Land series, when it comes to the later games I acknowledge it's mostly a "me problem" but Wario Land 1 felt like what I wanted the most out of a Wario game. The problem is, it was very slow... just not fun to play. When Wario got the Jet power up, it suddenly felt a lot better to me. I voiced this grievance on the forum and Cornholio309 answered my call. Now Jet Wario is just the default speed for Wario in all his forms. Jet Wario isn't made obsolete by this change either since he can still fly.

Another bonus this hack added is that you don't bounce off of cracked bricks, you just plow through them, and bull Wario just breaks all bricks like nothing. This feels a lot better to me. I can see Wario Land 1 being a game I actually enjoy replaying from time to time with this mod.

Wario's jump is still kind of floaty, but I think that is necessary since the screen is so small and his sprite is so big, you need to have time to react to where you are going to land. I do think there is one potential negative of this hack, since you're moving so fast, fireballs in the lava levels that jump up from underneath can blindside you, but that would happen anyway if you had the Jet Wario power up, so it's more of an issue with the game itself than this hack. Just proceed with caution when you encounter vertically moving fireballs.

Thanks again Cornholio309 for this hack!
