I am always more interested in vanilla style romhacks than others but with this one I found myself wanting a bit more. True to its name, this hack is a new Master Quest. It works within the same limitations Master Quest does, you get the same dungeons and rooms but with different object placements and sometimes different progression. Personally, I think Master Quest already did as much as you could with the exact same dungeons. You get some new things here and there with this hack but on the whole it just isn't enough and some of the new object and enemy placements are simply annoying rather than well designed. I will be honest and say I only played the child dungeons, however I think it was enough to see what the hack was going to be like. There are some things I did enjoy about the hack. The new enemy behavior is very cool and something I wish other hacks would experiment more with. Some dungeon decisions did surprise me, I liked going backwards through the bottom floor of the Deku Tree(However the room with the falling mini peahats was quite shit). I always enjoy having different patches for different options. That's about where my praise for this hack ends. As I mentioned earlier, a lot of the enemies are just placed in a way that is more annoying than well thought out. The Deku Tree was probably the worst in this regard, there are multiple wall skulltulas on every climbable surface and you don't get the slingshot until the end so you're forced to very slowly climb around them. Deku Scrubs are plentiful, more agressive and have a wider range; they're often put in obnoxious spots or in rooms where there are also more enemies to deal with ontop of them. Some puzzles are quite unique but are again either annoying and or unpolished in execution. What I really would have liked to see is somewhat of a Vanilla+ take on the dungeons. Same general theming and graphical style but with truely new room designs and layouts rather than being limited to the same old ones. I do understand that modeling new rooms is an entirely different skillset compared to the kind of edits presented here and may not be something the author can do but I do think its worth considering. I think with some more polished, less romhack-y puzzle design and newer feeling dungeon design, the creator could really make something incredible. Whats here isnt bad and a certain kind of player might get more enjoyment than I did, but as it stands I think this is a lot weaker than the original Master Quest.
| Simple but ultimate OoT romhack | YoungDays | 2023-04-15 | Version 1.9 |
Do not play this romhack lightly. You will not even be able to beat the Deku Tree. That is how hard and challenging this is. Especially Shadow Temple is one of the hardest dungeons in many other OoT and MM romhacks. Shadow Temple alone is worth playing this hack, but the other dungeons are very good as well. If you are confident in your OoT skills, try this romhack.
