Hack description

This hack changes most of the colors in this game to make it look more like its arcade counterpart.

It also fixes several text errors and increases the number of credits to 9 as well.

The author created an Help Wanted Ad for this hack, because there were stuff they couldn't do. You can check it out here to see what they need help on: https://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=36861.0

I Have to Admit it's Getting Better...+RyeGuy+2024-02-04Version 2.0

Getting better all the time.

With the exception of a single brown tone that still persists in areas that might normally be gray, this color hack is getting really great. I especially noticed the improvements in the second level. There is a harmony to the colors now. Very nice work.

Note: This review is based on playing this hacked game using on a real Sega Genesis console through an Everdrive Pro.

I hate to sound critical, because a lot of work went into this and it does actually play.

First of all, the 9 credits hasn't been applied to the file uploaded here. There are still only 4 in game.

First, the good.

Some of the graphics do actually look better than Pyron's version. The portraits in the character selection screen have improved. The font colors look a lot better as well. The background on the first stage where the junked cars show up were fixed. Those did not look right in Pyron's hack.

Here is where the problems come in.

The enemy character colors seem to have been changed to resemble that of the SNES version, as opposed to the arcade. Not necessary. Some sprites look even worse than the original Sega CD version now. Some elements of the first level (particularly the trash cans at the very beginning) look worse than Pyron's version or the original Sega CD version.

The main character sprite colors are a considerably worse than in Pyron's hack. Guy's details are now washed out (even more so than the original version). Cody's shirt is now dirty, like he accidentally washed it with his colored socks. Haggar now appears to have jaundice and is pale. Garbage cans are now made of solid gold for some reason. I can see what they were trying to do, but the Sega CD color pallet just can't pull it off. That is why Pyron elected to make more subtle changes.

I still recommend it, just because it is different and interesting to see.

However, it would be great if we could get the best of both worlds. It would be ideal to inject the character portraits, font colors, and "junk car section" from the second half of the first level from this into Pyron's version.
