| A new and fun experience! | Ace_Aileron | 2024-03-19 | Version 2.0 |
I originally played Antinomia when it first dropped and while I enjoyed it, it lacked a lot of the QoL features that one would expect in a hack of VI so when I saw a new version dropped that restored some of said features, I fired it up again and I'm really glad I did. All and all, Antinomia is a solid game and you get exactly what you'd expect: a retelling of Vanilla that has a heavy focus on OG Leo (i.e. You're getting the original Leo, not a slightly toned-down version found in ASC or Divergent Paths). The added story around Leo is extremely well written and doesn't seem like it was forced in the main storyline - the additions flow perfectly like they were always supposed to exist. The changes to the beginning of the WoR were enjoyable and it was fun to see this part of the game told through a different lens. Mog getting demoted to an NPC was an interesting choice and I'm 50/50 on how I feel about the decision. I can understand people not using him late game (sans making him a Dragoon with a Snow Muffler) but having to return to Narshe if you want to use the Moogle Charm can be tedious at times, and because you can't use him at all in the WoR, getting his dances in the WoB seems almost pointless. I would have rather seen someone like Setzer take the demotion but it's nothing I'm heartbroken about. The two new side quests are easy enough and enjoyable. However, if you're not following the "Read Me", it's likely you'll mess one or both of them up. Not the end of the world, but personally, I don't care for things that can be permanently missed when an event is time based but I digress. Speaking of the side quests, the rewards they give are going to make your party OP by end game. Because of this, your "A team" is going to be able to nuke just about everything with little effort, including the final boss. Not a bad thing by any means but this version feels even easier than Vanilla. Again, this game wasn't supposed to address things like difficulty but just more of an FYI. All and all Antinomia is a great experience for someone who wants to play a slightly different version of Vanilla and is a big fan of Leo. There are enough minor changes that it feels like a new experience even if the core story is the same so it's 100% worth a run or two to experience everything.
| A Fun Way to Play an Old Favorite | Fakade | 2024-02-09 | Version 2.0 |
Overall, I had a lot of fun with this hack. It still plays just like the SNES version with some additional flavor. For anyone looking to play this game again, definitely give this romhack a play! Observations - spoilers ahead The new intro with Terra...I really didn't enjoy. I also don't care for the intro with Celes. It's just a boring, repetitive slog. I know you can ignore it, but I do try to get the good outcome. It got to the point where I was save stating before talking to Katarin so I always got one of the chores to increase my score. I think I was in the mid 20s level when I got here, and Humbaba had the ability to one shot Terra. I eventually beat him by using her Limit Break. And just as a note, we get the "One Year Later" transition, and Terra is in the exact shape she was after Humbaba. It was kind of funny that she hadn't recovered in a year. The record player sidequest - this is me, but I hate missable things. Leo is really OP. In the vanilla game it's fine because you only control him for one scene. He joins your party with one of the best Relics in the game, and you can get it pretty early in WoR. I would suggest not letting him come with that, and maybe have some sort of quest where the player can reclaim it. There's a reason only one of them are in the vanilla game, and it's not exactly 'easy' to get. Also, his Shock ability is very powerful. It puts him really far ahead of a lot of the rest of the cast. These are just minor things. I'm really impressed with what was done in this romhack, and I would recommend this to anyone that wanted to give this game another go. Kudos!
| Great writing, nice improvements | Trevormark | 2023-10-25 | Version 2.0 |
About 90% of this hack is completely unchanged from the base game, and that's just fine. Because the other 10% is either straight up gameplay improvements (looks at the Colosseum part, the evasion stat, and the desperation attacks) and nice additions (a couple small sidequests in the World of Ruin), or... the General Leo stuff, which is the real reason you're here, and which in some ways actually exceeded my expectations. Final Fantasy 6 is generally considered to have some of the best writing of any Final Fantasy or really any RPG ever, and this hack's new censorship-free translation of the entire game makes it even better (for English speakers)... but the new cutscenes here that really explore Leo's motivations and personality manage to have amazing writing even by those standards. Just why would a guy as honorable, reasonable, kind, and all around good as General Leo fight for something as obviously horrifyingly irredeemably evil as Gestahl's Empire? This hack expands upon everything shown about him in canon to answer that question decisively. Beyond the Leo content, there are two other changes to the plot, which I have more mixed feelings about. The first is just turning Mog into a temporary character who leaves any time you rearrange your party. This is unfortunate, but forgivable since it was pretty clearly done mainly for technical reasons, of having to work within the game's party size limitations. If someone's gotta go, might as well be Mog, since the other guys with no connection to the plot (Umaro and Gogo) have unique mechanics. Still a shame, the little guy deserves a shot at Kefka just as much as Cyan does, but oh well. The other change is what happens as soon as you reach the World of Ruin. Rather than opening up as Celes on the island with Cid... that is replaced by a whole new sequence where you see what Terra's been doing in Mobliz. This new sequence is pretty neat. It has a lot in common with the Celes/Cid one, but you're actually meant to pass it and it is much more reasonable to do so (I am not actually sure what would have happened if I had failed it...). However, its presence DOES significantly change the whole mood of the transition from World of Balance to Ruin, as well as the balance of some of the encounters, which I dislike. No longer are you alone on tiny island, where the only other creatures are either tiny animals that are already dying or terrifying undead dragon corpses, uncertain whether there even is anything or anyone left alive outside the island. On the plus side, going back to that island where Cid was once you get the airship results in a really good sidequest with more amazing (and occasionally hilarious) writing. Note that fully completing it actually does require Mog, which is a bit annoying since he's been reduced to guest character. And that doing so results in a sword that is basically Illumina, and thus is absurdly overpowered. To anyone who has never played FF6 before, this hack does not replace the base game, but to anyone who HAS beaten the whole thing before, Antinomia might just be the best version of FF6 ever.
| Great playthrough, but needs to fix somes issues (More issues found in-game, see 1.2 update) | Lenilson_LG | 2023-06-01 | Version 1.2 |
In general, a great playthrough explaining some points that wasn't added in the original at the time. Playing with Leo as a playable character surely is cool and dynamically fun - but it has some problems that need to be fixed that prevents the player to proceed on the story, as soft locking bugged texts could pose an problem during the playthrough. But anyhow, this is an update to the story of the original. (Update 1.2 of the review) There is an softlock bug that forces the player to reset the game before entering Kefka's Tower at the end of the cutscene.
| A Tremendous New Playthrough! | SuperBen | 2023-05-11 | Version 1.1 |
I just finished playing through this, and I totally loved it! Terra, General Leo, and Celes really get fleshed out here! The extra scenes were a wonderful addition and felt that they flowed naturally. There were a few new things here and there that kept it interesting up until you manage to get General Leo in your party, though the hack still has a few tiny issues to clean up. I did notice a handful of grammatical errors along the way, IE: When Sabin and the group get separated on the Lete River: "Sabin! You're own your own now!" When I got General Leo in the World of Ruin, he kept appearing where my character would spawn into a zone (or if I entered/exited the menu), and this didn't stop until I changed party members. The Ted Woolsey script is left intact for a chunk of the game, though there were lines of fixed dialogue, some mild swearing was added, and some changed that were pretty damn appropriate, I gotta say. Some were pretty i impactful, like when Terra first arrived in Mobliz after the apocalypse, and Terra's final line to Leo in the ending was effin PERFECT! The hunt for record players in the WoR was a really neat feature, and the song choices it played were great, especially the panic song for the collapsing house! For things I would've liked to have seen improved:
In the end, I really enjoyed playing this, and it was great having General Leo in the party, even at the cost of Mog. Looking forward to seeing if any changes/additions come down the line!
