| A well polished hack. I cheated though. | EamonDeluxe | 2024-06-10 | Version 1.0 |
I just played through this and have to say I was pretty impressed. So much that I quit beating around the bush and finally signed up here to write reviews and stuff. Full disclosure first though:
So anyway, on with the review! The title screen is custom and well done. There was a minor graphics glitch at the top for me (looked like part of the area didn't get cleared properly) when the intro text was being displayed but nothing that got in the way of the text. The character selection screen is custom too and nice looking. To add to what the previous reviewer said, THEY ALL seem to give you the finger when selected so maybe Wario rubbed off on them? It made me laugh. I tried all four characters out briefly and there wasn't much difference that I noticed except only the original Luigi does his custom "airwalk" when jumping. Since I am used to him anyway, that is the character I used on all levels. The color palettes and other changes are REALLY well done and visually I found it very appealing. Some areas made me imagine a Sega Master System port could look like. Controls are...good. Occasionally they felt more sticky than standard SMB2, like crouching + jumping sideways didn't seem to work, Luigi would just go straight up, but nothing that ever caused a serious gameplay problem. The new uses for BOB-OMBs are awesome! Between breaking "wall puzzles" and blowing craters in the sand I had a lot of fun with them. I never got softlocked anywhere (even in the kaizo-like areas). All of the levels seemed planned out and tested. Level 6-1 was very cool looking and unexpected. The warp to world 7 is hiding in plain sight and the README is correct, you can't finish the game without it. At least as far as I could tell. The ending is customized too. Don't expect a massive change but there is enough there which shows that the author polished it from start to end. Something a lot of rom hackers don't do. My rating: 4/5 Bob-Ombs WITH cheat codes and save states. 3/5 Bob-Ombs as is.
| A tough, fun take on a classic | DixieNormous69420 | 2023-06-10 | Version 1.0 |
If you like a challenge, this is the Super Mario USA hack for you. It's way tougher from the get-go, but the levels are nicely designed around Luigi's jump height (which your humble reviewer's not used to :P), and are nice & colourful, with a neat 1 colour per level setup I enjoy. The 4 Luigis each have the same physics, so pick which one you like, and off you go. I've so far encountered 2 birdos, one orb-less, one with one, so expect multiple birdos per stage. One odd quirk is that 1-up mushrooms stay on the platform, but that's forewarned in the hack's description. Waluigi (my personal choice for the playthrough) flips you off in the intro, which I find fun. Overall, this hack is an easy 5⭐, much recommended for all fans of Super Mario USA!
