Reviews
| Almost perfect, still some issues | ziked | 2023-12-25 | Version 1.0 |
I tested both Complete and Merciless II on NTSC hardware. I first created a save in slot 1 with Complete, and then a save in slot 2 with Merciless II. Upon going back to Complete, the "Load Game" function caused a soft lock at the main menu. Interestingly, the "Load Game" function on the pause menu seemed to work better. But yeah, a soft lock like that is an issue. Perhaps vanilla save data and/or Mericiless save data causes an issue when parsing the text. I am assuming if you stick to Complete Edition, this is avoidable, but the fact you can't go in and delete specific afflicted passwords makes it still a valid issue where progress can be lost. The other issue is that 100% brightness is still too dark. It's nice that it defaults to this, but the extended 150% brightness in Merciless II is perfect. It would be great if Complete had a alternate version that allows 150% and uses it as default. The key-binding save feature is a huge quality of life upgrade. Without it, Doom 64 is annoying to play, having to constantly change everything each time I boot the game. Merciless lacks this feature, which makes it even less usable for me, despite the 150% brightness. So it's basically a situation where we need the best of both worlds. If this comes in a future update, consider my complaints irrelevant. Still, amazing work!
| Flawlessly backport to the N64 | Adam Catalyst | 2023-07-01 | Version 1.0 |
This hack does exactly what it promises to do, and can flawlessly backport the Doom 64 extra levels back into the N64 version. The new menu options are seamlessly integrated, and everything seems to have been done technically perfect. I haven't come across a bug or fault of any kind. The only criticism I have, is that the Doom 64 Merciless II patch provided an excellent controller preset that works exactly as one would expect with modern controllers, and this release would greatly benefit from a similar option to complete the back porting experience. That being said, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this as it is, and it's easy to recommend! Great job.
| A great way to play the new levels on the N64! | BulkSlash | 2023-06-26 | Version 1.0 |
I never thought I'd be able to play the new levels on my N64! It's great to be able to play them with an N64 controller as the game just feels right when played with it. It even lets you save your controller config, which is great as I like to map my controls to be more like GoldenEye's controls and it was a pain having to set them over and over again every time I booted up! There are a couple of things the Merciless Edition II patch has which I do miss in this version. One is you can't save before playing Hectic and the other is the map screen doesn't track the items/enemies/secrets found in a level. If those could be added it would truly be the ultimate version of Doom ever.
