This hack deserves all the praise it's getting here. Not only is it technically impressive and ridiculously polished, but it feels amazing to play as well.
| Incredible! A Definite Masterpiece! | ratedrguy | 2023-09-03 | Version 1.00 |
This rom hack is must. Seriously. From new mechanics to the graphics to the music to the gameplay. This is truly a masterpiece that really sets the bar. Thank you for creating this and sharing it with the community. What a joy to play! 10/10
| This is not a hack, this is a new game. | Greyfox | 2023-08-26 | Version 1.00 |
I already love old games, but new games for NES brings me joy, this games plays amazing, the music, controls, one of the best hacks of 2023. Love the font that they use it.
| Huge delicious pie | diablo666 | 2023-08-12 | Version 1.00 |
In fact, this is the most difficult review I've done. Why is that? And the reason is that this is almost a completely rewritten game at the moment. Why exactly am I saying this? 1. Graphic design of locations, enemies, environments. It looks like they really tried and were inspired by 16 bit games 2. Music. I can hear it clearly - this is not the SMB music engine. Why do I think so? More melodic, brighter compositions 3. Many different mechanics. I'll start by listing the minor ones, up to the impressive ones.
4. Elaboration of levels. They are nonlinear. They have different shapes. And in combination with local mechanics, then completely beyond the edge of fiction 5. Sensations from the process of passing this creation. In the aggregate of these points, it feels not like an ordinary hack of S.M.B., but as an independent product. I feel that a lot of time, effort, care and, to some extent, love have been invested in it. I compare this hack to a pie. Quite a delicious and high-quality pie. Taste it, because that's what you need to get a lot of new emotions and surprises from this creation P.S 101 Moons - it's not an easy task to assemble
| Great, but is this an hack? | LottoD | 2023-08-08 | Version 1.00 |
This patch totally overwrite your SMB cartridge with a Celeste clone. For those not knowing, Celeste is an indie game of renown that focus on double jumps, dash, mid-air control and a "die and repeat" approach. Try to reach meaningfull spots coming with perfect, risky and tricky maneuvers after a lot of errors. Controls are fit, everything work as expected, level design is great, the whole game could have been a smashing hit in the original NES library. I'm just worried about how much is left of the original code. New physic, new tiles, new HUD, new logic, is practically a new game with a Mario sprite. Frankly speaking, it's easier to figure out a Celeste disassembly ported to NES than any change of the original SMB code, as nothing of it seems to be left. So, great stuff, but somehow I miss the meaning of it. If you change Mario into a Tetris clone, are you playing an hack of Mario or a Tetris porting?
| Probably the best rom hack I've ever played | JellyKid | 2023-08-07 | Version 1.00 |
They made a whole new game. If it didn't have the Mario sprite, you would never know that it was a hack of SMB. The further I get in the game the more impressive(and harder) it gets. I haven't completed it yet, but I did get to a part that made me go "Oh my god, this is amazing" as the game transitions from one thing to another(I don't want to spoil it). If you like challenging platformers and are a fan of Nintendo, you are going to love it. Also, I would recommend trying it with an original NES controller if you can. The controls and timing are so tight that's the only way I could get through some sections.
| Got me hooked on Celeste! | SMLFan1234 | 2023-08-04 | Version 1.00 |
Before playing this stunning ROM Hack, I didn't really think about Celeste, but after playing it, it got me absolutely hooked to the gameplay, music and controls! 10/10!
| Don't let this masterpiece pass you by. | ItsRainingGravy | 2023-07-18 | Version 1.00 |
I collected all 100 Moons, and enjoyed every single moment of it. The description this hack provides simply doesn't do it justice. You're easily getting at least 3x the amount of content the original game provided, possibly more if the game proves to be a challenge to you. On my casual run, I clocked in at over 500 deaths and I'd say about 2-3 hours of playtime at minimum. Which is a substantially lengthy experience despite the modest "minihack" label. Not only is this relatively bug-free aside from some minor graphical glitches, but every single aspect regarding the overall quality is a finely polished gem that's as replayable as it is rewarding. From the crisp platforming mechanics, to the stellar level design, and everything in between (chiptunes/graphics/collectables/secrets); Celeste Mario's Zap & Dash delivers in spades. Even tosses in a meme or two for good measure, provided that you can find them. I wouldn't consider this hack a Kaizo, but it pushes the boundaries just enough to continuously keep you on your toes throughout the adventure. The checkpoint system is usually very forgiving enough to encourage you to keep going. Which is also aided by the save system and hints the game provides. It does require some fineness in mastering one technique in particular, but it does tell you about it and it's not very hard to do. Not to mention how it's only really required for the game's harder challenges that are tucked away, and you only need 60 Moons to experience the full game so there's a bit of wiggle-room if you're not too keen on finding everything. My only real complaints are that while I understand how there's no story to speak of, a small congratulatory message appearing for collecting all moons would've been nice to have. That, and while the map does show locations for most of the moons, it also doesn't show areas where secret moons are found. Nor does it keep track of the moons you've collected in each of the game's 3 worlds aside from a general total counter. Having some additional features to address this complaint, as well as a means of telling the player that there are 100 moons to collect in total, and I'd say that this hack would basically be perfect for what it set out to do. So while it isn't flawless, it's close enough to being such that I can easily forgive these minor grievances. If you've played Sunshine, you'll know what I mean (Blue Coins). I guess another minor complaint is that the coin system could use some work? Not really a huge issue, but their value could be enhanced to some degree. All they're used for is for the moon radar, and a single hint block for some reason. A shop of sorts would've been icing on the cake at least for cosmetics or something (Luigi?). But it's also not a huge deal since coins are largely pointless in the main series of games anyways. There could also be an easy mode for a more lenient difficulty setting so that more players could enjoy the game (seeing how there's unused hearts for the stamina bar), but I digress. None of these really detract from the overall experience, and are just some random musings on my own end. As far as I'm concerned, this game already stretches the limit that it needs to in order to feel complete, so just ignore my ramblings here. Regardless, do yourself a favor and play this game. I promise you that it's a real treat, and I'd love to see speedrunners pick this one up. To w7n and his team, thank you. It was a blast through-and-through. And I look forward to playing Mario Machina/Gaiden whenever it is complete. 9.5/10, and a phenomenal experience. Far and away the best hack I've played of the original game. Well done! === EDIT: So I actually missed a single moon towards the end of the game. No, it's not one of the "secret moons", but rather one tucked away inside a ceiling. It's in a spot where you really don't have time to use the moon radar since you have to stay idle to use it. I won't give this spot away per-se, but instead I will leave you all with a hint. Good luck, and hope this helps! When the Underground Theme/1-2 Music plays: "1, 0, 0, 0 - 1 - 3, 1, 0, *5*, 0" Alternatively, just look for Slash-18's 100% deathless run instead. He obtained all the moons before I did (Congrats!). But yeah this is partially why it'd be nice to have a list of moons somewhere in the menus, I'd say. Ah well. Fun game nonetheless. Anywho, there are 101 moons total, NOT 100. I saw a trailer that said 100, hence my confusion. Wasn't until later that I realized I was just one short (I thought the red hint block would have it; it didn't lol). Keep your eyes peeled!
| Absolutely the Masterpiece! | Slash-18 | 2023-07-12 | Version 1.00 |
It's really incredible that you used SMB1 engine to create the hack, aside from the small Mario GFX, it really doesn't like SMB1 at all. The hack greatly blending the gameplay of Mario and Celeste together, also some Metroidvania elements, and the gimmicks are really fun! I've collected 100+1 Moons in that hack and I'd say that's a fantastic experience, really recommend that hack! 10/10
| Impressive, Simply Impressive | Alan Vikam | 2023-07-10 | Version 1.00 |
This romhack does things you wouldn't think the og SMB could do. Hell it does things SMB3 doesn't do and we aren't just talking about the new abilities but also fine tuned collision and minor physics like carrying momentum. I'm speechless.
| pretty good | benfromnesuniverse3 | 2023-07-08 | Version 1.00 |
I don't like celeste that much but this is alright. Haven't beaten it fully cause its really hard but I have an idea of how the harder levels look like and I can see they are possible after seeing my fellow playtesters beat it. Music is pretty chill, don't like the first song but the rest are nice. It's probably really complicated to programme so like hats off. It plays nothing like vanilla mario ... much more like celeste. Where there are areas to critique its overshadowed by the massive amount of quality design choices and insane diversity in level design. Despite it being nearly impossible to complete, as a beginner I still find fun in simply playing it as some levels are not impossible! Even if your not a huge fan of celeste, I'd give this a try as I don't particularly see myself playing this hack much as I don't care about celeste. But I must say that it is overall quite fun, and a technical marvel within its own regard. :)
| The most technically impressive SMB hack in 30 years | kandowontu | 2023-07-07 | Version 1.00 |
To describe the amount of work that is entailed in such a romhack is something that could take days. The engine is flawless. The levels are brilliant. The challenges are all doable, and you don't need to be a kaizo player to beat them! The checkpoint system is incredible, and retrying challenges is as easy as saving/loading states, only its built into the game. The mechanics are easily learnable, and the QR codes/Speaker Boxes give you plenty of instructions to help you along the way. It is truly a game that you get much better at the longer you play. As an initial tester, there were challenges that took me 50 attempts each try, but now I get on the first attempt. There has never been a greater Super Mario Bros romhack since Extra Mario Bros, and at this point, I'm left asking, Extra Mario Bros/ATA who? w7n has delivered an incredible experience, and from what I've been hearing, this is just the tip of the iceberg. HIGHLY recommended for all players and ages!!
| Best SMB hack that goes above and beyond! | StickyChannel92 | 2023-07-07 | Version 1.00 |
This hack is simply outstanding. It stands out from other SMB hacks I know, since it feels like a completely different game from its source engine. Celeste Mario's Zap and Dash has Metroidvania-style gameplay and has you do many wall jumps and air dashes in order to collect moons from Super Mario Odyssey. It also introduces many mechanics that were never done in a SMB hack as far as I know. There are almost no bugs in the game — other than the couple at the last stage with the "Cosmic Clones" chasing you (in which one of the super moons glitches out a bit) — and it's a fun experience that I think anyone can enjoy. The music is probably my most favorite out of the hack. :)
| A fantastic Replica of Celeste's Gameplay | thedarkgod | 2023-07-06 | Version 1.00 |
A great deal of fun to play, everything seems well put together, containing a variety mechanics that you would never experience in a regular game of Mario, with custom UI and text pulling it together. If it weren't for that familiar mustached face you would be hard pressed to realize that it was a Mario romhack.
| A technical marvel! | alexrd189 | 2023-07-06 | Version 1.00 |
Incredible hack! I still can't believe it's using SMB1 and wasn't coded from the ground up, definitely a top tier mario hack! If you're familiar with Celeste, this hack should feel pretty familiar to you, while also having a metroidvania type of map. Highly recommended!
| One of the best NES gaming experiences. | Bloo42 | 2023-07-06 | Version 1.00 |
Played on MESEN. One of the most smartly designed hacks I've ever played. Incredibly difficult and precise, but somehow felt even more forgiving than Celeste. The feeling of reward is incredible; the precision required for the platforming combined with the advanced tech you can learn make for a very engaging experience. I absolutely love and adore this game and I commend the effort required to convert "Super Mario Bros." to THIS. Also a bug-free experience! aside from a narrow band of green adult mario faces at the bottom of the screen! Absolutely recommend, one of this year's best releases for sure.
| Amazingly well done. | junkyard_dave | 2023-07-06 | Version 1.00 |
Fantastic. I beat this today, and, it wasn't absurdly difficult. Lots of learning from death like in the original Celeste. Boggles my mind this is done within SMB1 engine. After the x-ray specs, it increases in difficulty. Absolutely recommended.
