Hack description

Metroid: Zero Mission is one of the most beloved games on the Game Boy Advance, but like many games on the system, its blown out and overbright visuals don't hold up well when viewed on modern monitors. This patch attempts to make a version of Metroid: Zero Mission which is easier on the eyes, with greater contrasts across the color spectrum, exclusively through editting color palettes. It is primarily inspired by the dark and lonely visuals of Super Metroid.

Please note that the colors of this patch tend towards the dark, and so it may be hard to see on various GBA hardware. It was made with televisions and monitors in mind.

Please apply the patch to Metroid - Zero Mission (U) [!].gba. It has not been tested it with any other versions, or ROM hacks utilizing this version.

Feel free to make use of this patch as part of your own personal projects, with due credit given to the author.

While the color palettes themselves are well done, the original game was a remake of Metroid (NES), which was full of colorful and memorable environments. Trying to make it look more like Super Metroid makes for a more bland look and I am not sure if I would call it an improvement when it's inaccurate to how those environments looked in Metroid (NES)

Easy on the eyes and better for the moodSupergamerguy2023-12-14Version 1.0

The work done on this Color Improvement hack is highly commendable. The bright, slightly-washed out look of the original game is gone, replaced by a somewhat darker, more serious take on planet Zebes. While I can understand why fans of the vanilla game would take issue with replacing some of the vivid colors from Zero Mission's environments, I think this is a great way to experience Zero Mission for the first time. This hack helps immerse the player further in Zero Mission's world and more subtle attempts at environmental storytelling, not to mention being easier on the eyes when using a backlit screen of any kind. While I wouldn't recommend using this on an original GBA, any other device capable of playing Zero Mission will make this hack look quite good.

decent hack if you want to have a "super metroid" feel to itjustaicon2023-07-22Version 1.0

This hack makes all the colors feel more like super metroid, due to its darkness in many areas. I mean, this is a GBA game after all, but however, I can see more people prefer the original color palettes rather than this hack. If you want to play Zero Mission with less brightness and more color details, then you should play this hack.

An excellent iniitiative but...Red Soul2023-07-22Version 1.0

Zero Mission has always been one of my favorites, and the curse of GBA's overbright colors hit it hard, so seeing it get sane colors for a change is refreshing. That said, I think the author may have gone overboard a bit and it looks way too dark.

Might I suggest restoring the brightness one step from what it looks like now? perhaps the best effect will be achieved then. Super Metroid may provide a good brightness baseline, as well.

Shouldn't be called something elser1ggles2023-07-22Version 1.0

Color darkening patch, or alt palettes patch, or any other name would work. Improvement makes it sound like other GBA patches that actually improve colors compared to what they would've been like if the GBA originally used a backlit screen, like the Super Mario World improvement as that's very washed out.

This is a completely different feel and look, which is fine, but should be named differently.

I do recommend it if you've already played the game with the original colors and are looking for something that's different from what the original is. Not improved or better, but just different.

While I can appreciate the intent, I think the new color palettes are too dark and end up obscuring many details. It generally feels like a dumbed down version of the game. Not recommended, stick to the original.
