Super Ale Bros. Redux - its 3Mixdiablo6662023-12-17Version 1.0c

My review is usually short and simple.

But today is a different case. Hack introducing Mario 3 mechanics, new elements and features to the game. This gives the game a special unusual flavor among other projects.

It is a bit similar in spirit to "Mario Maker" or the same "SMB 3 MIX". Both introduce unique and interesting freshness solutions.

So this hack is in the same comparison. And yes, who said that 5-4 in "HARD MODE" is impenetrable!? It's been fixed and it's as passable as the hack itself.

BUT personally, I don't like Kaizo Levels. (World 9 and hidden world 10, which is not listed in the description (P.S Yes... I watched someone else's walkthrough before trying it out myself))

But even so, this is a huge breakthrough in hacking on Mario 1 and I recommend everyone to have it in their collection!

One of the best SMB1 hacks out there.GameHackFan2023-11-25Version 1.0

This hack is just amazing, it has a lot of new interesting features that gives a new face to SMB1, I strongly recommend this hack, for sure one of the best SMB1 hacks you will find out there.

Best SMB1 Hack I've Ever PlayedGamingWithDrew2023-11-15Version 1.0c

Absolutely fantastic. This is far and away the best hack of SMB1 I've ever played. From updated ASM assets, physics, lowered input delay and great level design this one was a real treat.

Only nitpicks I have is there don't appear to be any sub-areas which could've been fun and 5-4 on hard mode seems impossible. Regardless, I love all the content and polish on display here. I highly recommend this to any Mario fanatic. This is the SMB3-Mix of Mario 1!

This gets a 9.5/10 and my highest recommendation.

The Best Mario 1 Hack in Years!Itssamuelsmartedits2023-10-31Version 1.0b

This Super Mario Brothers hack reaches far beyond our expectations. It almost matches the physics of games released decades after!

Clearly a labor of love!SpongeDan2023-10-30Version 1.0a

Given its long history of hacking, to find a new and fresh spin on SMB is quite an accomplishment these days; yet that's exactly what Mr. Funky has done with his hack. The author clearly loves the original game and has designed levels in its spirit, while also seamlessly integrating features from later installments that become crucial for advancing through the game. I haven't gotten to the kaizo bits yet (I'm more of a vanilla guy, myself), but the levels I've played so far are fun & cleverly put together, avoiding the traps of either being boringly easy or punishingly difficult. It's definitely up there among the best SMB hacks ever.

What an incredible engine!kandowontu2023-10-30Version 1.0a

This is a shining example of how far SMB modding can really go. Left scrolling? Textboxes? New envorinments? A fully functional pause menu?!

The developer has gone above and beyond on this one, and I look forward to seeing what he comes up with next!

If you're ready for a new SMB adventure that looks like something Nintendo could have produced, give this one a try!

This Mario Maker-esque hack won't disappoint!StickyChannel922023-10-30Version 1.0b

I love this hack. It does introduce many features never done in a SMB hack before, such as shell-holding (and this mechanic in the Kaizo worlds, too!), P-switches, and on/off blocks. I also love that the hack uses Mario Maker-style graphics, especially the Desert.

Also, Mario controls really well, too (again, similar to Mario Maker's physics); he gets up to speed when run-jumping while holding left or right, unlike the original, where you need to clear a bit of distance in order to run-jump.

Great hack, would recommend!

The best SMB1 ROMhack as of yetBrette2023-10-29Version 1.0a

As it is, SMBX is not ported to the NES, making this the closest thing there is to it. The levels resemble the designs of more modern Mario titles while still bearing much of the vanilla aesthetic. I will not spoil much as the experience is incredibly noteworthy, however, the art is a mix of recycled Mario assets and fully custom images.

The only thing truly lacking from this hack is custom music, despite this, it is of little importance when compared to the insane amount of other features described. The Worlds are aplenty with variety in appearance, difficulty and playstyles. No level is particularly a gimmick level, no filler levels or such.

Whilst most castle levels share a homogeneity in design, its forgivable once you see the occasional unique castle deviate briefly from the orthodox. The traditional approach to the levels is applaudable too, whilst creativity is evident, the attentiveness towards player expectations allow for a smooth experience to SMB1 Veterans.

I would say, that SAB Redux is a manifestation of what you would have dreamed in your sleep vanilla SMB1 to be. Similarly, I would say that this reflects what one could imagine the vanilla game to be had it a larger budget.

Admittedly there are a good number of bugs in it, although, the introduced bugs are far more interesting than the vanilla bugs to the extent that many were left in simply due to being so unique. These bugs are often quite hard to create, harder still at times to replicate and therefore are unlikely to hinder your gameplay.

Most Vanilla bugs have also been removed, both to the players advantage and disadvantage. This is not merely a VS SMB 7-2 softlock fix via moving blocks, but modifying the code such that it is impossible to cheese or break your game in this way.

I personally have much admiration for this project, and favour it above all other hacks as of this date commenting for it is the most "Mario-like" ROMhack of this calibre, whilst there is much talent in others, I feel that there is no hack this good that truly encapsulates the SMB1 experience. I enjoyed so much that I sought invitation to be part of its development and endeavoured not to reduce its glory.

This ROMhack is indeed hardware viable, I would not waste time reading any more comments and put it straight on your flashcart if you have one!

That's f***ing great!Beloslavixxx2023-10-29Version 1.0a

It's incredible, I can't believe my eyes! Is there anyone who has not decided to make my thoughts come true? You know, when I was a kid playing Mario on the dandy, I dreamed that after passing the level 8-4 I will be waiting for what is presented in this hack. I will not be verbose and say only that this is a really cool work and I'm with interest now pass this game, freaking out at how great it is. The author of this hack has diversified absolutely everything, including small details. This is the kind of improvement that should not make you disappointed. The graphics, level design, new features and abilities, physics - it's all top notch. Thank you to the author for such a flawless hack, I really liked it as I am a fan of the original SMB and Super Mario Maker. And all the tricks that the author took from SMM - looking very cool. To all this I would add 2 more kinds of jumps from NSMB, I think you know what I mean. All in all, this is truly excellent work and I recommend everyone to play it, paying attention to all details, even the important ones! Thank you, author!
