This is a really solid hack! You won't find a ton of mind-blowing ASM work or anything like that here, but it has a wide variety of creative worlds, as well as interesting level design that isn't brutally difficult. My favorite was probably World 4, which was a dark neon wonderland, and that's exactly my kind of thing. That said, I did also really enjoy World 5, which has the unenviable task of following such a wild departure; it almost perfectly sets the feeling of twilight in a snowy landscape, just as advertised. Worlds 3 and 8 were favorites, too; I know that's half the hack, but that speaks to its strong visual design. The level design was on point, too; there's a very interesting pipe maze in 4-7, and fortresses keep throwing you for a loop with new ideas. The last thing of note is the new music; I've seen some complaints, but honestly, I like most of it better than what the original game has to offer, especially how the airship music takes the tone in a completely different direction. This hack shouldn't be missed!

I loved the graphics and the varied music. Although I admit that the gameplay is really complex, especially in more complicated levels (perhaps impossible to complete), they are all enjoyable. So I respectfully recommend it.

Alan Jacobs did an amazing job putting this hack together over several years, and his hard work and skill shows through well. This is fun, clean, elegant, and satisfying in how close it feels in gameplay to the original.

Most classic Mario rom hacks aren't all that great and tend to be designed for sadists. This one actually feels like an official expansion of the game that is slightly harder than the original game, but not by a large margin. Level design is mostly fantastic outside of a few stupid stages with lakitu spam and the gosh awful "pick a door/pipe trope". Level theming is also pretty good- you don't normally see a vaporwave or candy world in the canonical Mario lineup.

If there's one department this hack is weak in, however, it's the music. The new tracks just sound off- almost like something you'd hear in a dream or if someone was playing the game on an 80's sitcom and the producers wanted to get around copyright laws. If there's any updates to this one in the future, I think the ability to switch between this "United" OST and the original music from Mario 3 would work wonders.

All in all, it's still the best hack I've played since SMB3 Mix.

When I was reading the synopsis of the hack and the author stated that the difficulty was on par with the original, he was correct in saying that. The game has its challenging points (having the ability to use save states came in handy) but it is not stupid hard as I have seen in other hacks. The casual gamer, like myself, will have absolutely no problem picking up the controller and giving it a go.

As for the graphics in each level, they were almost like the original game, but the blending of the colors was perfect. They were done quite well to fit the theme of each level.

Let's talk about the map screen. They are very well laid out, and drawn very well, and the animation of the plants and other objects is superb. I even enjoyed the new "Club" icon that takes you to a coin bonanza. Entering one of these gives you the ability to do nothing but collect coins so you can rack up your reserved lives. This is a nice touch that adds a little spice to the gameplay along with a break in the actual gameplay.

The music was nicely composed. Primarily for each map screen. As for the BGM of the levels, it can be a little repetitious, but not so bad that it gets annoying.

The last thing that I want to say is that UMB 3 is a 100% overhaul of the original that is done to perfection. You can tell that the programmers put in the time and effort along with great care during the creation of this hack and I strongly recommend it. You will not be sorry. On a side note, you will get a kick out of what Peach says when you rescue her.

This hack is beautifully done. The graphics are fresh and the music is likewise good. It doesn't change up the gameplay much making it feel like a continuation of the the original game with fair difficulty. Definitely a recommend for anyone wanting more Super Mario Bros 3
