Hack description

Tetris Rosy Retrospection DX

It's Finally Here!!!!!!

The wait is over, Creeper presents: The Tetris Rosy Retrospection Colorization Hack!!!

Includes:
-1) Randomized colors for the Title Screen, Level Selection menu and Rocket screen!
-2) a slightly improved "Danger-meter" adding blue at the bottom (Inspired on Tetris Axis)
-3) Guideline Features!!!!!!

Also includes Bug fixes from the original hack and improvements:
-1) the 7-Bag always starts full now!
-2) Pieces now spawn in the 21st row instead of the 20th row
-3) a better moon(?) sprite

Note: The game will NOT run on a DMG console.

WARNING: THE PATCH DOES NOT INCLUDE THE ROSY RETROSPECTION HACK!!
So you must patch your rom with Ospin's hack first and then this one, otherwise it won't work

Original hack: https://retrohackers.net/hack-details.php?id=5813/

Enjoy!!

and someday, the "DX" and the "Rosy Retrospection" words will change places... wink wink

Known Bugs:
The top 2 rows are never checked, so they never clear (heredated from the original hack)
Color isn't applied to the top row on the Game Over animation (Probably heredated from the Original Hack)
Multiplayer crashes
Kicks aren't obtained properly sometimes (Heredated from the original hack)

Changelog:

v1.3

This was first gonna be 1.2, then 2.0, then 1.1.1, then 1.2 again and now 1.3

- An Extra Legal screen, you can skip it by pressing A or you can also disable it forever by pressing B
- Now you can pick whether to use the Danger-Meter or not :D

- Fixed the bug where the screen filled with garbage when pressing B on the high score screen

- Now the board background isn't white!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, Don't like the new color?, you can change it with these game genie codes:
??0-00B-C40

??0-01B-F7F

Replace "??" with any value you like

To bring back the white, use these values:

FF0-00B-C40

7F0-01B-F7F

Once the game boots and the palettes are loaded, disable them, they're a bit unstable when clearing lines

- Made the shadow of the O piece darker

v1.1
-Oops, turns out that the pieces actually spawn in the 22nd row(according to the guideline) and not in the 21st as Creeper thought, fixed! (They now spawn in the 22nd row)
-Ghost Piece and Hold piece palettes are lighter now to avoid confusion

v1.0
-first release

Rainbow can be disabled!Onrii2024-07-30Version 1.3

For those that would find the rainbow colour on the sides distracting, it can be disabled by selecting no to "enable danger meter" when starting up to have normal borders. This mod brings needed colour to the best Tetris Gameboy hack to make it even better. The colour of the pieces is more in line with modern Tetris compared to Tetris DX.

Go playing the original hackMRDFG Blacha2024-06-04Version 1.3

I 100% agree with what the other reviewers said. There are so many colors on the HUD and on the blocks that they become distracting and confusionary, like a rainbow of colors that's been splattered everywhere in the game without a little bit of thought put in. Like, why does the background have to be all dark blue, making some pieces not very visible, and the HUD at the right THREE different colors? What's worse is that the two player mode doesn't work in this hack, even though the author has already mentioned this issue.

I'm sorry but I seriously cannot recommend this hack to anyone. Just stick with the original Rosy Retrospection hack. Sure, it does not have any colors, but at least the two player mode works there!

Wish the colors were less obtrusive.nbd2024-01-11Version 1.1

Color choices are too jarring on white. The UI draws too much attention to itself and feels distracting, particularly the rainbow framing both sides.

Weird color choices make this less enjoyable than b/wseajay12212023-12-29Version 1.1

Color's nice and all but I don't love the aesthetic they chose. It feels like a carnival game or something. Not very Tetris-y.

Hoping someone does a colorization that brings it more in line with the Tetris DX graphics. That's the gold standard imho.

Dare I say, too colourful?JCR2023-12-08Version 1.1

Tetris Rosy Retrospection is hands down one of the best Tetris games to pick up and play and this is a fantastic addition. Overall a wonderful fresh coat of paint that makes it very hard to go back to using Game Boy palettes.

Having said that, two things that I think it suffers in comparison with the Game Boy version and even Tetris DX:

  • the UI feels a bit busy with multiple colours
  • the white background is not as easy for the eyes.

F I N A L L Y !!! This is the best Tetris game of all time!lordelan2023-12-07Version 1.1

Damn, I played this for hours on my Analogue Pocket yesterday and really felt like a hyped child. Apotris is technically still the better game of course, but there's something about the Game Boy's original Tetris that is just so... magical. It's not just the music, it's the whole experience. Having something like Rosy Retrospection was already a gift from heaven. And having that one receive a colorization hack is more I could ever ask for.

As the first reviewer here mentioned, the dev (Creepercraft) was also involved in a pretty decent GBC Tetris homebrew game called Pandora's Blocks so be sure to check that one out as well.

Back to topic: Ever since all those DX hacks popped up and ever since I was addicted to the experience, Rosy added on top of the vanilla GB game, THIS was the one hack I wished would happen one day. And when Creepercraft did OG Tetris DX recently, my hopes were higher than ever. And finally he delivered, so: Thanks Creepercraft. You've turned me into a small boy again, playing Tetris all day.

The only thing I noticed is that the "preview shadow" for the yellow piece was not that visible on the background but apart from that the current version is already very well done and stable.

Fantastic finish to basically the only GB Tetris hack worth consideringRustCurve1699322023-11-30Version 1.0

Everything in the hack is just perfect. From the colours to the minor tweaks, everything is just perfect. Beware: Playing this hack may cause you to be unable to play on base Tetris anymore. I know I can't go back after this.

It's great to see the Tetris Rosy Retrospection DX hack get out into the world. The game runs fine with no bugs nor glitches, and is a great way to play the original. It's a marvel it works, since Rosy Retrospection's code is a bit fragile, so to have this work with few bugs is great. Overall, this with Rosy Retrospection makes one of the best Tetris games even better. If you want to play Tetris, try this out.

Wow probably the best Tetris game ever now!?atpstudios2023-11-28Version 1.0

This is amazing! the colors are perfect! as well as the quality of life features.

I doubt I will play any other version now! One thing I'm not sure if its just me, but I feel like the outline of the pieces might be a bit too dark? I guess my brain just has to get used to it but it messes me up sometimes I think the outline is the actual piece sometimes I feel like if the outline had a bit less pixels (like every 2nd or 3rd pixel in the outline should be missing so it looks like its not as solid as the real pieces maybe?) if it was changed to that I think it would be perfect.

FANTASTICSuperEgz2023-11-28Version 1.0

This will probably be my favourite way to play guideline tetris going forward! Well done! Great colours and bug fixes. Its a joy to play!

For other types of tetris, with different randomizers etc, I recommend checking out the "Pandora's Blocks" homebrew Gameboy game, which also has some code contributed by Creeper!
