Hack description

A 6th anniversary hack from the website Insectduel's Domain contains 12 levels without warp zones and halfway mid-points. Bonus levels are limited. Consider this as an anniversary gift celebrating 6 years of Insectduel's ROM-Hacking hobby. Don't expect it to be too easy or too difficult.

Graphics - This hack stands out for its aesthetics, which alone are a reason to try it out. The whole game is remodeled to look like the US SMB2, aka Doki Doki Panic. This effect works great, and with the new font, new palette, and clever enemy design, you almost forget you're still playing a variant of SMB1.

Level Design - The level design certainly shows a lot of effort, and can often be a speedrunner's nightmare. If you're the kind of player who gets satisfaction from running through levels quickly without stopping, this hack isn't for you - as you would likely get hit by a flying Beezo (Bullet Bill), a Spark (flame), or a Hammer Bro's hammer 10 seconds into your dash, so unless you have the gift of foresight, you'll have to take it steady on this one. With that said, this hack plays a bit slow-paced for my liking, but i can't justify saying that is a total negative.

I have to mention though that the difficulty of these levels is quite inconsistent, however. I ended up having to use save states a couple of times on 1-2 and almost ran out of time at that, but was able to get through 1-3 on my first try going at a decent pace.

Obstacles - There are some notable beginner's traps and/or cheap shots in the level design as well. In World 1-2, there is section where the player has to make precise jumps on top of three Bullet Bill cannons to cross a chasm, and one is topped with a mystery box.. if you don't have a mushroom, you can easily grab one as you jump to the next cannon, but if you do have one, getting the fire flower means you have to jump back down onto the cannon below and avoid falling in the chasm - which is much harder than it sounds.

Another early beginner's trap is in 2-1, where you'll encounter one of those pesky hidden blocks that hacker's like to put in front of chasms to knock the player into them. While i find the 1-2 trap to be likeable by concept, i generally think the 2-1 style of trap is cheap and unnecessary.

Overall, 4/5. Worth a try.
