You finally get to play as Golbez. We all know that we wanted to and it would make sense, but there is more than a simple change of a party member. What we got here is a revised script. It's far better written and gives more depth, and you can even learn more about who Golbez is and more than the vanilla version told us. The new script is excellent. The difficulty is a Mish mash. Some times it's classic vanilla, then it's challenging. I do not know about the lack of challenge, but this can be tough with some new bosses and some new tactics needed for some. There is even a few new bosses here that are tough. Another factor is that Golbez does have powerful black magic but you no longer have Edge's smoke screen to escape or throw in the endgame. This is a worthy hack. Challenging at times and a good rewrite.

I went into this expecting a playable Golbez, and I got that. There's so much more, though; some characters stay in your party longer, for one thing, and they get some great new weapons. Lots of dummied commands and items have been restored, as well. Even more exciting is that a lot of items formerly only dropped at those ridiculously low rates, such as Rydia's extra summons, are MUCH easier to get now. Edge was demoted to NPC, but for Golbez, it's a good trade-off; Edge was never all that useful, anyway. If you're most familiar with the North American release, there's a lot new here; I can't recommend it enough!
| A nice twist - but lacks difficulty | Xardas | 2018-03-08 | Version 3.1 |
In this hack, you keep Edward and Cid longer. Which is very welcome because they weren't in the party too long. The cutscenes have been altered to make perfect sense. (Seriously: In original FFIV when Cid drops the Bomb to seal the underworld: why the heck does he jump overboard rather than just throwing down the damned bomb??) Therefore, there is also more equipment for both of them. Some character commands and summons which were dummied out for the US release (Recall, Pray, Goblin, Bomb...) have been restored - in a good way! The summons can be found in treasure chests, opposed of being dropped at an unreasonable low rate as in the original FFIV releases. (Since I wasn't a fan of Edge, I'm not sad that he became a NPC) The hack does pretty much everything it promises to do. However, there is one thing which comes too short - it's the difficulty. Depending on which releas of FFIV you played, you will either feel a little underchallenged (if you just played FFII US) or downright bored (any other release except for easytype). Only 1 or 2 bossfights in the end are a little challenging (Zeromus is not one of those). But since the main feature is Golbez joining, this hack probably aims to be suitable for a large audience, as many people dreamed about having Golbez in the team. At the end of the day, I recommend this hack to everybody who want to control Golbez AND replay the story once again (a little bit altered, though). If you are looking for challenge, then this hack is definitely not interesting for you.
| Great hack, a desire for extra difficulty | Cjb137413 | 2017-12-12 | Version 3.1 |
I have greatly enjoyed playing through this mod of final fantasy 2/4 . The plot lines make sense on what ifs with the build up of Golbez being playable and even little details to give an extra oomph to the story, overall very well done, a definite worthy hack of a side what if with this game. The only tidbit I noticed was a feeling of domination through the game leaving me wanting extra difficulty, the characters seem a bit extra powerful where the enemies seemed weak. I would love to play with more difficulty from enemies perhaps a hard version of this hack for future? Overall great ideas great hack greatly enjoy this a must play for any FF4/ FF2 fan.

| Not only a romhack, but also a patch to Final Fantasy IV. | thepatrickinator | 2017-06-04 | Version 3.0 |
This Final Fantasy IV romhack is not only a Playable Golbez hack of Final Fantasy IV, but also a patch to it as well. The Playable Golbez Edition adds Golbez to the party after Golbez breaks free from mind control in the Babil Giant. I've really loved the After Years references and unused content from the original game that was added to this romhack and that is the reason why I stayed away from the original game. We get to see two characters with stats from The After Years and the romhacker chose Golbez to be playable. This is a Final Fantasy IV that no one at Square could have ever imagined. Well done! We finally get to see more character development with Golbez this time and seeing the family reunion after Golbez breaks free from mind control is the reason why I'd never want to go back to the original game again. Golbez is the best character in the game and seeing him join his kid brother made this romhack a wonderful experience. The majority of Golbez's battle sprites were edited from Dark Knight Cecil. I understand that Edge was chosen because he really isn't that important to the storyline compared to the other characters and his design in the program is much easier. It was a very brave sacrifice and the results were overwhelming. Golbez is the strongest and most useful character in the team. He starts at Level 50 and his gameplay is just the same as The After Years. The only difference is his Darkwave command replacing Taunt, which is gimmicky to use. Darkwave works like Struggle as of the Generation IV Pokemon games, but costs 1/8 of your life after doing damage. He starts out mediocre at first, but you'll get used to him once he learns Flare at Level 55. Pressure stops most enemies in their tracks making random encounters easier. He has very good stats, and giving him the Ebony armor makes him a force to be reckoned with.
| Very well done | Ligeia | 2014-10-25 | - |
I like this type of hack, which remains faithful to the original while adding a twist or two to make it feel fresh. The incorporation of Golbez in the team is very well made, it happens a bit late but I guess there was no other choice. All the other changes are welcome and make the game a better experience. Definitely worth checking out next time you'll feel like playing FF IV !
| A good twist on a classic | NovaSurge | 2013-07-16 | - |
Version 1.3 Wanted to play the old FF2 and figured I'd check what roms were out there. I was not disappointed with this one. While not a ton of changes, this hack does a great job of incorporating Golbez into the story with a good set of dialog to match. New items are solid, and the two new bosses towards the end kicked my butt the first time around. Thought the inclusion of Edward was cheesy at first cause there were two of him, then my mind was blown in the Tower of Zot when I fully realized how he was worked in. Pros: New items, slightly changed story and you're still a spoony bard. Cons: Wanted to summon a shadow dragon. Edge no longer shows anyone the power of anger, my fav line of the game. But someone had to be cut, and unfortunately I'd have to agree, its him. Overall: Awesome. Well done.
| A new twist to your next playthrough | ShiningForceHero | 2012-01-05 | - |
This hack was definitely fun, but things weren't quite what I expected, mainly the mention of the part of the author of cleaning up the script; the script was VERY similar for a large part of the game, until you hit parts that he has specifically changed for the inclusion of Golbez. I myself was expecting a bit more then that, but it could have been worse. Another thing that could definitely use some work is a possible improvement on enemy difficulty. Since there are often some parts where you are traveling with an additional character then you normally would, it makes a game that is already not too hard really easy. I do have to say, it was definitely fun seeing Edward be my most damaging character when you get him back later. One bug that the author should look at is that when you gain Goblin with kid Rydia, it only costs 1 MP even though it claims to cost more, making her by the far the most damaging character at the time. I would say you definitely want to look into improving the end game mini-bosses (the powerful weapon guards and whatnot in the moons core). With two characters dropping Flares and Meteos, they become extremely trivial. Also possibly buff the last boss. Overall I would say this hack was a nice new change without making TOO many changes. I had fun playing through it and recommend someone who is looking to play through FF4 again with a slight twist, but prepare yourself for a game that's even easier then the original.
