Hack description

Despite having thousands of remakes in different systems, Final Fantasy Adventure was still missing a Game Boy Color version, so here it is!

Changes in this version are:
* Full colorization
* New world map (the old one was basically an empty space with 4 or 5 house icons)
* Some of the bugs in the original game are fixed here: after casting Heal your defense power is not reduced anymore; a moogle item can now be used to heal a moogle status.
* Inspired by the great hack made by xenophile, the sprites of the main characters are displayed in the char name selection menus.

Awesome! Just like a new game!FFADX2024-07-03Version 1.01

Thank you, korxo! You did a good job! Every year, I googled FFA colored version, wondering someone did it. Finally, "Dream come true." I enjoyed playing it very much, especially the map is really good, and the color of the airship, mountains, caves, castles, and towns...I can feel and realize the world of FFA. Just like a new game. Btw, Ice Cave's bug has been fixed, and the dark spell effect has no longer caused the all black screen. I just finished the game, the final animation has a little bug, flickering, glitchy, when changing to the next scene, but it's OK. Really recommend this DX version, it's a whole new journey you never forget!

Beautifully done in Color!BlackPaladin2024-06-23Version 1.0

I remember once upon a time when I tried running this game on an old emulator (on DOS) but couldn't run properly. Now, not only can I play that game on an emulator... I can play it in color! I love how this looks!

The only thing that could make this DX hack even better is to add a Super Game Boy border. (I dunno if that can be done, but it would be so cool if that can happen in the future.) Thank you so much for colorizing this game!

VERY nice!UhmYeahBut2024-06-16Version 1.0

It's a really good upgrade, but I do have points -

The 'empty' map in the original was kind of intentional - It was designed to encourage players to explore and discover the areas for themselves. The houses were your only guarantee of some-place safe. As much as I like how these details were implemented here, an option/separate patch to play the way the map was originally-displayed would not hurt.

Likewise, It's kind of selective that the map would be upgraded, but not the script. There are existing patches which address this, but I have not tested them for compatibility.

Finally - and this is much more of a personal preference - I feel the blue-hues should be lightened a bit and the growing charge-bar given more clarity.

Yep. I'm groaning. But I love this colorization to one of my favorite GB games. I guess my biggest demand I have about these kinds of projects is to offer options rather than force changes. Everyone on RHDN does this, and it's almost-always at the modder's discretion. You may have removed a feature in your grand update because you didn't like it...but I may have loved it and I can't figure out a way to restore it!

Give the choice. It would be VERY nice if you did!

Makes The Game Come To Life!SwiftlyTony3602024-06-16Version 1.0

Final Fantasy Adventure, a game I grew up with, is now in full-color! Now I can enjoy this fantastic adventure even more than before. I appreciate the new palettes that were introduced, such as a new colored overworld map and the character sprites color changes. Thank you Korxo for making this possible.

Terrible color palettes, unfinished colorizationLigeia2024-06-16Version 1.0

FFA is one of my favourite games ever, I played it to death as a child and a DX hack is one of my most wanted things ever, gaming-wise.

All this love and those very high expectations that came from it are probably why I'm so disappointed in this hack. There are two things that are major deal breakers for me :

  • Color palettes are terrible. There's neon colors everywhere, put together with no sense of style, clashing very badly and being very displeasing to the eye. The author should consider teaming up with someone who has a sense of what colors match together and how to create an eye-pleasing ensemble. It's obvious he puts together colors he likes indivisually without considering how they fit into the general picture, like someone who'd create a dish with ingredients he liked seperately but that just don't go together and don't make a cohesive meal.
  • Much of the game is not colorized at all. Be it characters, walls, objects etc, there are lots of stuff just left in the original b&w, which looks odd and adds another layer of clash with the stuff that is colorized. Some screens aren't even 50% colorized.

For those reasons I don't recommend this hack and suggest you wait for a more polished one, or for substantial improvements made on this one.

Best way to play this one!nerb2024-06-15Version 1.0

Absolutely amazing work, spent all morning playing and the pallets are fantastic. I am 2 bosses in and loving it, I can feel and see the hard work put into this hack and going forward will be my favorite way of revisiting this game. A big thank you to korxo for this gem!

Edit: THE ARMOR SETS CHANGE THE COLOR OF YOUR APPEARANCE it's so awesome!! Almost at the end of the play through and I'm absolutely amazed.

For the first time in color!Ok Impala!2024-06-15Version 1.0

It's heartwarming to finally see Final Fantasy Adventure (Mystic Quest) in color after all these years. I'd like to thank korxo for putting in the effort to finally give this game the color treatment.

I really appreciate added stuff like the new overworld map and character sprites in the name selection screen.

As for palette choices, I personally would've preferred some other choices here and there, so I'm hoping for some updates to make it smoother in some places.

Overall, it's an amazing thing in itself to finally see this game in full color on original hardware. xenophile and myself have been working on our own extensive FFA hacks (Legend of the Mana Sword) and Embers of Mana (Embers of Mana), we are also working on our own colorization. I would like to invite korxo to contact us to talk about this amazing game we all love. You can send me an e-mail at [email protected] . Looking forward to talk to you!

Amazing but needs a little refiningTjazz2024-06-15Version 1.0

The colorization game is really wonderful, an amazing job, the only thing I have against is some colors are a little too vibrant, such as the grass, sometimes they make the image too vibrant

Otherwise the hack is a sold thing.

It's great! Play it!xenophile2024-06-15Version 1.0

First off, I work on a Final Fantasy Adventure hack called Legend of the Mana Sword. To date, I haven't had any contact with korxo (feel free to get in touch with me).

Being able to play in color is wonderful! As someone who has played Final Fantasy Adventure more than a few times, I had ideas about what colors everything would be. Final Fantasy Adventure DX nailed the important parts (Rabites have pink tails-that's very important), but what I loved the most was when it surprised me with choices I didn't expect.

Also, the new in-game world map is amazing! I'm seriously jealous of how great it is. I've tried designing a world map for Legend of the Mana Sword and was never able to make something I really liked.

I did encounter some bugs. I hope a 1.1 can fix some of them:

  • A reproducible crash in the cave in Snowfields when visiting a dead end.
  • The shutter transition effect is still enabled and its effect on sprites can be seen through the fade transition. (I think this could be fixed as easily as copying the normal LCDC effect over the shutter effects.)
  • Transitioning while effected by Dark causes the screen to be completely black.
  • QoL request: Maybe speed up dialog text printing?
  • None of those are deal-breakers but I think they would probably be reasonably easy to implement. Even without them it was a joy to play, to see everything in a new light. Every new area changes up the colors, keeping things fresh and interesting. I kept being pleasantly surprised the entire time! Thank you!

Looks amazing!!!! Makes me want to play nowatpstudios2024-06-14Version 1.0

This hack looks amazing! I gave this game a pass a few years ago but just seeing your hack with all the beautiful colors is making me go back to play it right now!!!! Thank you for all your hard work:)

The only way I will play this game from now on. Really nice colonization with interesting choices made. This is a game with a huge following that was really due for the colonization treatment. Have yet to see if it's compatible with other hacks but this is the definitive way to play for now I'd say.
