Breath of Fire 2 is another one of the author's favorite RPGs from the 1990s. The early Breath of Fire games weren't anything particularly new (character-development-wise), but they were well executed and fun to play, and definite creativity was demonstrated in different character's abilities. Every character can do something nifty to help out your team, and the party lineup can be organized differently in battle via different attack formations, which have varying affects on the attack/defense/speed of each combatant. The Breath of Fire series catapulted non-humans into central, heroic roles (Breath of Fire was the first game that the author remembers that memorably did this). And lastly, building a new town was an incredible feature, and gave the player a sense that they were really are making their own destiny and affecting the game world.Screenshots

| Makes enemies ridiculously strong and game very grindy | Bregalad | 2018-12-01 | Version 1.0, rev.1 |
The problem with Breath of Fire II (at least the GBA version which is the version I played the most) is that it takes a lot of time to grind, and that characters are not balanced, i.e. Ryu, Rand and Kat are strong and useful, the other characters are very weak and completely useless and could as well be taken out of the game it wouldn't change it. I hoped this hack fixes this problem. Maybe it does but at the start of the game the enemies are ridiculously strong, i.e. they can kill Ryu or Bow in 2 hits (non critical). This means returning to the inn or the water pond after every battle, a second battle will be fatal to your party if the first wasn't. Needless to say this is not extremely fun to play nor is it a very well balanced hack. Maybe the hack is better if applied to a save game where a good chuck of the game has already been played through? I don't know but at lest it doesn't feel good starting a new party with this hack enabled. Hopefully this'll be fixed in a later version. | |||
