This is a pretty large change of Mega Man 2. | A fun spin on Mega Man 2. | The Beaky Buccaneer | 2021-03-02 | Version 1.0 |
In spite of Bass proving to be fans' favourite Mega Man character in a 2018 Famitsu poll, Capcom has very rarely granted him playable status, and this hack is a fun way of addressing that oversight. The Adventures of Bass II gives Mega Man 2 both a level-design overhaul and a fresh coat of paint, and though it has some areas that rely a bit on enemy-spam, the levels have a nice flow to them and are generally well-designed. The new story is about what you'd expect for an inversion of the usual Mega Man formula - in a Donkey Kong Jr.-esque turn, Dr. Light is now cast in an antagonistic role, with Dr. Wily's creation having to set out to defeat him, instead of things being the other way around. All of the Robot Masters and their weaknesses are the same, but this is explained away by Dr. Light having stolen their plans from Dr. Wily and reprogrammed them to do his vengeful bidding. It's a little bit out-of-character, but it does the job. The altered graphics look perfectly good (with the sunset hues of Bubble Man's stage looking particularly nice), and the custom Bass sprite seen here was clearly the best option for the time that the hack was made - he's colourful enough that he's easy to see against the black backgrounds in some stages, which can't be said of the lower-colour NeoGeo Pocket Colour sprite of the character that was doing the rounds on the internet at around the same time. Not only that, but being almost 20 years old at the time of writing, this hack was created long before 2010's Mega Man 10 gave the character an official NES-style sprite! To me, the difficulty feels largely on-par with the original Mega Man 2, and though there are a few somewhat frustrating spots (something that the original had as well, albeit in different places), it usually all feels pretty fair and well-designed. If you're a fan of Mega Man (or of Bass), enjoy challenging platformers, or like the idea of role-reversal hacks like this, and don't mind diving into an older hack whose features are less fancy than what's possible today, The Adventures of Bass II is a solid option. Recommended. I tested this game in the versions of RetroPie for both the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B and the Raspberry Pi Zero W, and it worked as it should with both.

The Adventures of Bass II Levels: Okay Graphics: Eh (Palette Change) Music: No Change Enemies: No Change Bosses: No Change Weapons: No Change Castle: Okay Difficulty: EASY-MEDIUM (Occasionally HARD) Comments: While the theme is at least novel for the time, Adventure of Bass is a fairly unremarkable hack. The overall stage layouts remain the same, and given that there's no new weapons or enemy AI, the hack feels like a slight remix. The stage design is decent for the most part, though the disappearing block section in Heat Man's stage and the spike section in Wily 3 are both really punishing. The hack is fine if you've got nothing better to do, or if you REALLY have a thing for Bass.

Though your mileage may vary, this is probably my favorite Mega Man 2 hack of all time. Full disclosure: I love palette swaps, and this game has some of the most beautiful palettes I've ever seen on the NES. Air Man's stage is just slightly off from the original, but it's just enough to give it an entirely new feel. Flash Man's stage has been redone with several different colors as bright as an electric popsicle. Quick Man's stage is neat, but when you get to the Hotheads, the background changes to a beautiful dim blue that simulates what a room would look like were it lit only by a blue flame. Wood Man's stage has trees with leaves in a color that shouldn't be able to even exist, but I'm glad that it does. Bubble Man's stage has gorgeous orange waters that remind me of the _9 rounds in Penguin Land on the SEGA Master System. Even the Wily stages are great; the third stage in particular blends what might be the only shades of red and green that go well together. Even the enemies are beautifully colored, from the pink Fan Fiends to the golden fish in Wily 3. The level design is mostly fair; it has a few jerk moments, but so does the original game, so no love lost. This isn't a total overhaul of the game, but it's far more than I'd expected - I just wanted to play as Bass, because he's cool - and a work of absolute beauty. Sivak Drak, if you're reading this, I'd still be elated if you ever finished and released The Adventure of Bass 3!
| Way better than Bass for MM1. | Kallisto | 2017-02-08 | Version 1.0 |
The stages are decently design while there is a few hit or miss inside each stage that could use a bit of re-work as I felt some enemy placements was a bit of a cheap shot, but overall this romhack was actually pretty decent. Also it has the usual color changes like most romhacks for Megaman out there. I feel the Bass design could use some work simply use the official sprite nowadays, but that is lesser point. I can definitely recommend this mod.

The best part of this hack is the beautiful and stylish stage colours. I loved those colours. The level design, somehow, retains the essence of the original game, just like the revenge of the 8 robot masters (is quite a bad point to me, but I said it because some players love this fact) and Bass have different colours for each weapon. Is a good hack at all.
