A great translation for an underrated gemreluctantkaneda2020-12-29Version 1.2

Final Fantasy Legend was my first RPG, and a good game, but with some serious flaws.

This version improves many parts of that game, in addition to the 16-bit sprites.

TowerReversed's translation isn't just the only English translation available: it also boasts some improvements over the original, although it is very similar.

Now if only there was a version where you could choose whether to let your Espers changes their skills...

Some of this review is to state the necessity of such a translation. The official English-language Game Boy release was nice of Square back in 1989, but the Wonderswan remake contains many quality-of-life enhancements to the original game that make it the better version to play. For instance, in the original the player was never told when Espers gained new skills/stats; you had to check in your menu after each battle or find out the hard way in the following battle that the Flame spell you were counting on was randomly replaced with a weakness to Ice spells. Moreover, you didn't have any in-game descriptions of what spells do, so you had to look it up in the manual, which is still available out there in PDF format, but not for Nintendo's lack of trying to shut down game manual sites.

All that is to say, even if this translation had major flaws I would recommend it. This is currently the definitive version of the original SaGa, and I am eternally grateful that anyone bothered to translate it, given that it's one of the least popular games in a series that's not very popular in the West. However, there are no errors per se that I can identify. I don't read or speak Japanese, so I cannot be sure, but everything I encountered-from weapon names to spell functions to NPC dialog-made sense.

My ONLY fault with it is that, at certain points when Japanese characters are overlaid on the screen, the English text is often plastered over it with little regard for contrast. It can be hard to read at times. But I mean, who else has a translation of this version of the game that comes even close?
