Translation description

This is an English translation of the Game Boy Color version of Donkey Kong Land III (while the game got an English release, it was for the Game Boy, not Game Boy Color). The dialogue in this translation is largely based on the English text in the original Game Boy version of the game. Only a few changes were made to the text, such as spelling corrections.

The font is borrowed from the SNES version of DKC, as opposed to the one used in the original DKL3 for the Game Boy. This font looks cleaner, and contains both uppercase and lowercase letters, while the original DKL3 font only contained uppercase letters. As a result, the text is easier to read in this translation.

Besides editing text, certain other screens were modified and translated back into English, most notably the title screen.

In addition, a few features that were removed in the Japanese version of the game are restored in this translation, namely the world map animations and the last attempted time when playing the Time Attack mode. The Jetty Jitters demo is fixed as well. Bear's animation has also been restored. Similarly, some bugs that were present in the original game have been corrected. These improvements were not present in the original v1.0 patch, and were gradually added in the v1.1 and v1.2 patches.

More recently, a v1.3 patch was made. This fixes the coloring of some sprites: Skidda, Knocka (when carried around), Bleak's snowballs, and Karbine's fireballs. It also adds 4 new demos, and replaces three of the existing demos, which were seemingly unfinished in the retail games. Rickety Rapids had a graphical fix (present in the retail game). There are two versions of this patch, with different title screens, based on the two title screens in the retail English games. Some other bugs in the retail games were fixed; see the README for details.

This translation patch is fully complete, and contains no known bugs, other than what the original game already had.

Enjoy! The patch should be applied to the Japanese game for the Game Boy Color, titled "Donkey Kong GB: Dinky Kong & Dixie Kong". It will not work if applied to the original English game (titled "Donkey Kong Land III") for the Game Boy!

The definitive version of Donkey kong Land 3!ScottRubin2023-04-30Version 1.3

NEW Review (april 2023), 1.3 version Recently I ended up replaying the entirety of the game yet again with the new 1.3 patch. Just like what I said back then, this is a great effort, huge respect to Blaziken257 coming back after so many years to polish up this hack even more and for putting so much care to bring this game to its most definitive version!

OLD Review (17 march 2018), 1.2 version I played this game from start to finish and I absolutely loved this hack! Blaziken257 managed to take the colorful GBC version and improve it by restoring stuff, fixing bugs and most importantly fully translating it to English. I honestly recommend to play the game with this hack rather than the clean version.

The best version of Land 3 - Made even better!cornholio3092022-02-10Version 1.2

If you never bothered with the Donkey Kong Land series, it's a surprisingly well done conversion of the Donkey Kong Country games to the Game Boy. They're not quite exactly ports either, given some of the radically different level design. It makes the whole thing feel sort of like a level add-on for the original DKC trilogy in it's own cute weird way.

The only real drawback to the subseries is that the highly detailed sprites can be difficult to see on a real Game Boy screen due to the extremely limited palette Rare had to work with.

Come Land 3's localization in Japan, and the whole thing was ported to the Game Boy Color, eliminating the above issue. While you still had to deal with an unlit screen, things are now much easier to see on the handheld and that glorious color makes a world of difference in the sprites. Unfortunately, we never saw this port to the Game Boy Color anywhere else.

Being able to play the game in English is wonderful and the speedup the system has in Game Boy Color mode eliminates some lag you'd see in the original non-colorized version during gameplay. Even if you're cool with the uncolorized sprites, this difference alone makes this version much smoother to experience. The fixed up sprite animations that were cut were also really nice to see the author mess with! It wasn't needed at all, but the fact they're back shows a nice level of care with the hack.

Highly recommended, especially if you never gave the subseries a shot. This is the best entry in the series, and everything this hack does makes it better.

Excellent!JulianoFdeS2019-05-21Version 1.2

This hack is excellent, the colors make it beatiful and I like the bug fixes. There's only one thing that need to change, please, remove your own name of credits screen, why? Well.. it makes the credits a little longer, and it is bad for speedruns! If you want so badly your name on the game, I suggest and highly recommend put it on the intro screen!

Overall.. best DKL3 hack ever!
