Translation description

This is a complete re-translation of the original Japanese version of Bionic Commando. The official US release is notorious for its censorship and Engrishy script. This release should be the definitive version of the game for the NES.

This patch needs a headered ROM.

This allows you to play an English version of Bionic Commando on the Mega Everdrive Pro through the NES core, as the normal US version will display corrupt graphics.

The Lord's work is doneGhaleonUnlimited2019-06-25Version 1.04

Not only does this make a fantastic game even better, but this is a pretty important game culturally with its use of Nazi imagery.

So to have the English version retranslated and restored is an important so we can contrast the restored version to the original censored version and examine how early videogaming handled controversial imagery.

Really grateful for this author's work!

Loved seeing the restored game, lukewarm on the new dialogueNeoKobe2017-07-12Version 1.03

This is an important romhack, finally bringing, more or less, the original Famicom game experience to the English-speaking world. I really enjoyed seeing the various restored (and surprisingly numerous) gameplay and level-design differences.

Major props to the hackers for pulling this project together. I think they have a fair claim to calling this the definitive English version.

That said, I found the new English script somewhat mediocre. The stereotypical German accents are a bit much, but beyond that debatable stylistic choice these characters never say much of anything that's interesting; mostly pedestrian threats that pass by without notice. Serviceable, sure, but not engaging or memorable.

It's hard to say how much is due to nostalgia, but I find the (godawful) original NES translation more interesting and memorable. It at least leaves an impression, you know? I guess the question is how good and/or bland was the original Japanese dialogue, and how does this localization compare? That I cannot answer. I just hoped to enjoy this more, is all.

The readme file has a relevant comment:

To each [their] own, but this definitely isn't a literal translation. Please accept that when playing the translation or play the US version or just the Japanese version.

This patch makes an already great game amazingtalbin2017-05-21Version 1.03

Bionic Commando was one of those games I played constantly as a kid but found frustrating because of the lack of a good translation. When I found out the game had been heavily censored I was even more frustrated.

This patch is an absolute delight to play and made the classic game perfect. I actually beat it without a FAQ since the translation is perfect. I also really appreciate the perfection of the author coming back and continually fixing bugs.

Amazing work and do yourself a favor and play this now!

Nintendo of America should have always been lenient instead of their strict kid-friendly policies.thepatrickinator2016-09-18Version 1.03

Nintendo of America was too much of a coward in their video game policies back then and I am happy that it is fixed today. This hack improves all of the stupid censorship that didn't have to happen in their video games back then.

Redefining a ClassicRodimus Primal2015-03-07Version 1.02

I've followed this project since it first came out and the improvements made are well worth it. No more Engrish that was difficult to understand and gone is the censorship present in the original. This game holds a special place for me as a classic game I played all the time and now being able to play it, uncut and translated properly makes for a much more enjoyable exeperience.

The title screen looks like a great cross between the NES version and the Japanese version. The font prints faster than the NES version and it looks much better than earlier versions. Plus there isn't any words that are broken up by hyphens so you aren't trying to put words back together.

The gameplay has not changed. It's the Japanese version, in its uncut but translated glory. If you've never played this game before, or if you've played the original NES version and want to see it without censorship, this is the version to play.

The Most Important Translation in NES History!XDel2015-03-05Version 1.02

I have been waiting for years for someone to do this. In the past we got a graphic hack for the NES release that restored the swastikas, but that was all, the game play was never returned to it's normal state, and no one ever stepped forward to make a translation. I presume that has a lot to do with the quality can capabilities of our ROM hacking tools? Well what ever the reason, a group has stepped forward and resolved this tragedy with a full translation of the Japanese original! As for the translation, from what I have played thus far, it is top notch and I have no complaints what so ever. Not only did they add a bit more passion to the dialog of the characters, but they also gave the German character an accent. On top of this, the graphics are as they should be, swastikas and all, and everyone's name is returned to what it should be as well. More than that, the difficulty is a bit harder, and (drum roll please), you can once again torture captives for information!!! So to everyone involved with this project, let me say I am your biggest fan, and thank you so very much!!!
