Translation description

Makoknight and Co. did an excellent job with the translation; this is truly what I'd call a flawless script. It's much truer to the Ys saga than the Sega Translation was, and much more grammatically correct. So, what are you waiting for? Find the ROM, download the patch, and have a blast!

Great Piece of RPG History, if Not Much Else...firedropdl2018-11-04Version 1.0

My "YES" recommendation here comes with a few caveats...

Let me get this out of the way first. I absolutely hated playing this game. I actually didn't mind Hydlide, so I didn't think I would despise this game as much as I do.

The translation itself seems really good. I didn't find any problems with it and nothing seemed to be unnecessarily cryptic. That being said, it just seemed to be like doing homework while slogging through this comically unbalanced game. My usual rule to myself to not use a FAQ didn't come into play here, and I found myself using one almost every step of the way about 1 hour into the gameplay in an effort to just put this one behind me. Unfortunately, the only FAQ available online wasn't really specific about anything and also had some bad info in it on where to get items, so it was only of limited use and I had to waste a lot more time playing through this one than I would have liked.

Boss fights are unnecessarily frustrating even at maximum levels because of the combat mechanics. Use that save game feature often and prepare to die... a LOT!

Now that I'm done with it though, I'm glad I played it. Ys III for the SNES was one of my favorite games on the system and this is a nice little piece of history here that we didn't get in English speaking countries. I'm going to be taking on the translations of Ys II and III here for the NES soon and hope the gameplay isn't this terrible. Wish me luck!

Thanks to MakoKnight and team for this translation.

Recommended only to fans of the simple combat style brought to us in Hydlide, and/or die hard fans of the Ys series. You might actually get a lot of enjoyment out of this one. It does seem to have a small but devout following.
