Translation description

Here is a full English translation of Kaettekita Mario Bros.
Currently the only issue as of now is when you go to the TOP 5 score screen there is an additional letter next to your name when you check the scoring screen.

- NOTE: This may have issues with some emulators as it has been reported but it does work fine on FCEUX.

- 5/24/2016 UPDATE: Some text issues have been corrected and title screen has been fixed.

Make sure you have the right filehdofu2019-08-02Version 0.98

Anyone trying to patch this I'll give you a hint.... the romhacking site description and every topic explaining how to do this will not work with the most widely available dump of this game, I don't care what they say about applying the right header, it won't patch. To get this to work, you will need a file in the non good collection of fds roms. Finally after applying it to one of the roms from that set it worked right away.

The hack is a basic translation hack and I appreciate the effort the Author put into to make it easy to navigate the menus and read what is posted on the screen. Overall this hack makes the 1988 Famicom Disk System missing link between 1983 Mario Bros and the German exclusive 1993 Mario Bros Classic Playable by everyone who speaks English without having to guess about menu choices.

A few suggestions/nitpicks...JamesMedia2019-06-15Version 0.98

While I do like and recommend this patch, I'd like to make a few criticisms:

  • Make the signs in the ads/intro more stylized like in the original version. Either that, or don't change them at all. They look very bland with the standard text in their place. Here's some mockups I've made; feel free to use these if you'd like: https://i.imgur.com/L6fIHy0.png
  • In the Ochazuke ad/intro, the smaller arrow should have some mention of Nagatanien. Nagatanien should not be included in the larger arrow.
  • All other mentions of Nagatanien in the ads/intros are redundant, as the Nagatanien logo is already present on the "boxes".
  • The sign in the Mario 3 ad/intro should have something along the lines of "Mario likes it too!", as "Try it now!" is nowhere close to the original line. the former phrase also just happens to fit perfectly inside the frame, as demonstrated in my mockup.
  • Change the punctuation characters. the thin punctuation clashes with the thick letters. The font "Press Start 2P" has just the right ones for the job.

Good job, but can be betterSzemigi2018-02-26Version 0.98

Well, very nice job on translating it to English (this seriously increased my interest), but I saw the advertisement signs, for example, are "bland" (actually simplistic because of using single letters instead of graphical signs). But this is not a giant problem at all! This is a very little and minor problem!

I suggest you to make the signs fancier, stylize them and it will be even better, man (just like the original Japanese signs).

And I say, this translation is still enjoyable despite of that!

A little bland...Sephirous2017-10-28Version 0.98

I consider this game to be somewhat of a sequel to the original Mario Bros. and quite frankly expected a more eye appealing translation. A title screen saying "Mario Bros II" or at least making the text more fancy like the original Japanese Text.

Most of the translations if not all have been redone using standard text taking the eye appeal and stylish graphics completely away leaving a bland and somewhat cheap looking translation.

The game is playable and still fun considering it is very much like the original Mario Bros.

Do I recommend this translation? Well.... Not really... It does make the game readable but doesn't really may any difference to the game play as it is straightforward.

Maybe if the graphics were more stylized and more eye appealing, Then yeah, I think it would make a great translation.

Overall, Better than nothing.

In-game dialog and menu translation is always a must, but...Weicxiable2016-10-06Version 0.98

...I feel as though translating the title screen and the pre-game advertisements is a bit much considering that the original Japanese text is stylized to the artwork while the translation uses the plain text symbols and isn't stylized at all, making the artwork look kind of ugly as a result.

It is for that reason I'd personally recommend that you release a version of this patch that translates everything except the title screen and pre-game advertisements, instead keeping them in their original Japanese.
