| High quality translation | T29 | 2022-04-12 | Version 1.12c rtm |
This translation is incredibly well done, I even forgot that it was fan-made when I played it. Even the accents of some characters were translated (Cyan uses the pronoun "vos", for example). If you want to play the game in Spanish without the common fan translation problems (lots of bugs, some phrases that don't make sense, excessive swearing), this translation is for you.
| Very well-done translation into Spanish | Chaclán | 2022-04-07 | Version 1.12c rtm |
This was one of my favorite video games of all time, and I recently decided to play through the game for the 6th time in Spanish so I could experience the game in my second language. I know every line of dialogue in the English version by heart, so I was very attentive to how accurate and faithful the translations were to the original English version. They are almost 100% faithful, but do occasionally take some liberties that are an improvement upon the Woolsey translation. For instance, the imp equipment uses the word "kappa" instead of the "imp" word, which is actually more faithful to the original Japanese translation. Woolsey translated the "Kappa" word to "imp" in English, though it is more accurately known as a Japanese turtle demon. Instead of "Imp Halberd", it's "Pica Kappa". The translation also competently characters with different speaking styles. For instance, Cyan speaks in antiquated Spanish which heavily involves the use of "vos" and even adding an extra "s" to certain verbs, which coincides with his heavy use of "thou" and "thine" in the English version. Gau speaks in heavily stilted Spanish with unconjugated verbs, which coincides with his feral upbringing and his use of heavily stilted English. The translation is also more akin to Spain Spanish, with its use of the word "vosotros" and the occasional use of the verb "soler". One of the more remarkable things I noticed was that the translators added a larger charset that appears in the menus, and manages to squeeze in full esper names like "Valigarmanda" which were shortened to "Tritoch" in the original english version. It uses some characters that are actually multiple letters combined. It also adds the accented vowels that written Spanish has. It even modifies some visual assets, like the word "MUTE" in the mute spell has been changed to "MUDO". This would likely involve extracting the image asset from the ROM, updating it, then putting that new image back in the ROM. This attention to detail does not go unnoticed by me. My only nitpick is that the word "imp" in the equipment names was translated to "kappa" in several places to be faithful to the Japanese version, but the "imp" spell was translated to "diablillo" to be faithful to the English version. "Kappa" may have been a more consistent translation for that spell. Great job! I am pleased to be the first reviewer for this impressive effort!
