| Well Made Hack that Looks Fine on a CRT | saldite | 2024-05-09 | Version 2.0 |
Well made translation that fixes a lot of the issues with the original localization. Only complaint I have is similar to the one review that mentions the translation of certain Japanese food item names, or Koban becoming "Coin Cat", but these are baby preference nitpicks in a translation patch that is otherwise excellent. Saving function is super nice as a replacement to passwords. It only works on the journal entry passwords, not the start of the level passwords, as a reference. No issues with saving on an actual SNES with an SD2SNES nor issues with a MiSTer FPGA. Not sure what the one review was complaining about regarding the font. While it is quite thin, testing on S-Video and Composite on my CRT with my SNES has the font perfectly readable while sitting across the room. Likewise, YPbPr/Component and Composite from my MiSTer on the same TV has the same legibility. My CRT isn't a PVM or BVM either, it's just an old consumer sharp with some image issues I got for free. Everything looks good even with real hardware.
| The definitive English version! | riverman_paul | 2022-01-26 | Version 2.0 |
I truly wish this was the version I grew up with. It's the only version I will play now, and it's the only version I will recommend to my friends. It's so great to have more of the story and character of the Japanese version restored and be able to actually read it. Even the place names were translated on the in-game signs, and thanks to that, I am going to plan a trip to Japan based on the places in the game. A huge THANK YOU to the people that worked on this. My only very minor desire is that the names of the foods had been translated to English letters (aka Romanji, such as "unagi kabayaki" instead of "eel skewers") because the actual Japanese food names are easy to just Google to learn what they are, and it's fun to know exactly what the foods were intended to be. But this is a very minor thing that probably only I care about, and I can totally see why they did it the way they did.
| Unreadable font | RetroProf | 2021-04-17 | Version 2.0 |
It's nice that we have a patch that retranslates the game, thus fixing the censorship from the official localisation, and also adding SRAM to sort out the awful password system. Unfortunately the font is unreadable. It's way, waaaaaay too thin. Clearly whoever tested this only used an emulator. Playing it on real hardware, even with crisp visuals using an RGB SCART cable, the font is too thin to be readable. It's a single pixel in width and ends up blurry and very difficult to read on a Standard-Definition CRT TV. Playing it is very unpleasant as a result. There's a reason the English font was as thick as it was - it made the font easily readable on all TV screens. I really want a normal font for this.
| Good translation, not sure about SRAM | Dzumeister | 2020-11-15 | Version 2.0 |
I really like the new localization for this, the fonts used are easily readable, and the new text sounds really natural and easy to understand. I was really excited about the SRAM hack, too, but I'm not sure that it's working correctly. When I get a Game Over and choose to continue from the title screen, I end up starting again at Act 1. It's not a deal breaker, but I hope the team can get the hack to work (if I'm not doing something wrong, that is).
| Better translation. | fgooglesbs | 2020-08-29 | Version 2.0 |
Not only do I like the more direct dialog, but it also gives some small details about some of the enemies in this game along with some of the names of the bosses and names of the groups some of the enemies belong to that the original English translation left out. It's worth playing it to see what's new since the dialog isn't exactly the same as you know it.
