| A needed translation, but came released too late at its time | tsubasaplayer16 | 2023-12-02 | Version 0.9 |
X is a very unique game, ESPECIALLY on Game Boy - it's a full-on first-person shooter game with 3D graphics (with crappy FPS, but it's on GB, what do you expect). For many years, there has never been a translation for the game until a few years ago (at the time of writing this review), and came out excellent overall. It was much needed since some reading is necessary to know the mission objectives. However, the release of the fan translation was very much unfortunately timed, because shortly after, the unreleased official translation of the game, which was supposed to be called Lunar Chase, got leaked. It would have rendered the fan translation useless, however, there are a few significant differences between the scripts that got changed from the original Japanese script to the unreleased official English version, such as the name of the tank the player controls, VIXIV, in which Lunar Chase never mentions. If this was released much earlier, then it would have gotten more significant value. As a result, you may want to stick with this instead of the unreleased Lunar Chase, unless you want to play that instead, in which there's nothing wrong with that. The sprites are untranslated, so I guess that's one reason. (Reviewed and played on an EverDrive GB X7 on original hardware.)
| Unfortunately Timed, But Still a Solid Effort | FateForWindows | 2020-09-09 | Version 0.9 |
X is an incredibly underrated and technically impressive game that usually gets overlooked due to the lack of a good translation... until now. It took years, but the game finally got a mostly complete translation, and people would have finally got to experience the game in full english. Unfortunately, the timing of this was incredibly poor; on the same day this was posted, the official translation of the game, Lunar Chase, got leaked. This doesn't completely obsolete this translation, though. There were some interesting details in the script that were different between the two: for example, the tank that the player controls is refered to its name, VIXIV, in the Japanese version, while Lunar Chase opts to omit it. On top of that, the game takes place in 8191 in the Japanese release versus 2096 in the English. I'd expect more of those minor differences later in the game. Either way, it's a shame that Lunar Chase will likely overshadow this, but it's a solid effort nonetheless and provides another way to experience the game.
