Reviews
| The best English version yet | dudejo | 2023-12-01 | Version 1.052rtm |
Although this is based on an older translation, most game-breaking glitches have been fixed, some lost functionality was restored and virtually every text error has been cleaned up. Even the controversial splash screen has been made much milder. Sadly, a minor issue remains with the menus in DQII that cover up the Princess' name but it thankfully doesn't break the game. So at this time, although not perfect, this English translation is most likely the best one on SNES. ADDENTUM: As other reviews have brought up, there are still a couple of glitches to look out for. With that said, the game is still very much playable from start to finish when compared to the original RPGOne build. Seriously, the starting point was an absolute mess. And while this translation has caused some controversy due to the translator's choices, I'd still recommend it because, frankly, no one else has bothered to make their own for DQ I+II.
| Dragonlord transformation sequence NOT fixed | Thirteen 1355 | 2023-06-05 | Version 1.052rtm |
Despite what the description states, this hack has NOT fixed the transformation sequence during the final boss fight. It makes me wonder how many other bugs weren't fixed. I'm sure not excited to have my Dragon Quest 2 playthrough be ended by one of them. I guess the GBC version is still the best one, sadly.
| Not everything is fixed | Vector 67 | 2022-02-18 | Version 1.053rtm |
One of the splash screens says that "ALL bugs are fixed" but that's completely wrong. Chance spell behaves very buggy when it creates effect for making monsters flee or confused, music also becomes buggy and battle theme will play over current location's music until you re-enter. The text that dragon lord says before transforming is exact same as when you accept his offer to rule the world, i am pretty sure that's not what he supposed to say. Names for some things seems to be all over the place, like how most enemies and characters have their japanese name, but final boss is still "Malroth" instead of "Sidoh/Shidoh", one of the NPC calls bell amulet "Dragon's Bane" as well. And one thing i really didn't liked is addition of second "l" in "Firebal" spell. This spell name has been in so many games officially localized by enix and it's clearly not a mistake on their part, it was stylized choice. I don't know if creators of this rom hack realize this, but i hope they revert this change back, it's a legacy thing that deserves respect.
| A good, but disappointing effort. | Jormugandr | 2021-11-25 | Version 1.052rtm |
I applaud everyone's hard work on this project, but I just can't recommend it. The direct translation from Japanese for things like character and monster names is incredibly confusing for anyone with a history of playing these games with the great original localizations. Some of them don't even make sense. For instance the WolfLord enemy is now Wolf Mammal... what? And correct me if I am wrong, but I'm pretty sure the final boss was never called King Dragon, even in the Japanese version. Some very strange choices made. I really hope there is an "Erdrick" version in the works, because I don't like "Roto" and it certainly doesn't match any official English translation we might get of these games in the future.
| Excellent, I've only found one thing off so far | Mario86 | 2021-08-07 | Version 1.052rtm |
Played through DQ1 with no issues. Onto DQ2 so far the only thing I've encountered is a weird text clump ",,fe" when talking to the man at the south monolith prior to obtaining the silver key. Otherwise excellent so far!
| This makes me exceedingly happy! | Red Soul | 2021-06-17 | Version 1.0 |
I'm not sure if this patch was brought about by my review of the Spanish one, but if so, I'm glad my ranting had some constructive use! It's great to know that now it is possible an important part of this great franchise with all the trappings of a 16-bit uplift without any worries, so many thanks to the hackers and testers involved in this addendum.
