Even though I can't recommend this game to anyone (it hasn't aged well at all and is too simplistic while being brutally difficult), I can fully recommend this translation to anyone dead set on playing this title. The font is thin, but legible and the small amount of retranslated dialogue helps give this game a little bit more flair to it. Even if Kunio doesn't control like he's in the fight of his life, he sure sounds like he's taking it seriously. It's also the obvious choice for anybody wanting to experience the overall story of the Kunio-kun series by giving its first entry a shot. This is a must have for anybody revisiting this dated game today.

Renegade is an interesting game to translate; there's minimal text, so there's really not much to work with. That being said, Stardust Crusaders did an admirable job improving upon what Vice Translations did fifteen years earlier with their River City Ransom Zero hack.

The title screen packs a new logo for the game that looks gorgeous, rocking a bolder design of the lettering that lets the logo pop in a way that Vice's version with their slimmer style couldn't do. Past that, the wider typeface used in the nameplates is a vast improvement over the squished typeface in the Vice Translation. To Vice's credit, they worked with what they had fifteen years ago.

The new translations of the few lines of dialog packs a bit more flavor, and contains swearing, which can be a hit or miss, depending on your expectations. The game has a gritty aesthetic to it, so the swearing fits neatly with the game's overall grunginess. On the other hand, it isn't something that you would see in an official release, so it's not really Nintendo-accurate, if that's something you look for.

I'm not great at Renegade, so I haven't been able to see anything past the second level. Still, this is an excellent translation overall, and a staple to Kunio fans who want to experience the series' first entry on the NES/FC.
