Shin Megami Tensei Devil Children: Black Book was the first in the Devil Children series. The first three entries were never released outside of Japan, but the GBA games were released as DemiKids; overall, translation choices from DemiKids were not used in this translation, instead opting to stick with most of the names used by the mainline Shin Megami Tensei games.Screenshots

The script clearly needed another pass, but if you (like me) played games like Sword of Hope and Wild Arms in your youth, you'll be able to handle this.
| It is a bad translation, but unlike other translations it is complete | YoshiWhite62 | 2021-11-05 | Version 1.2 |
It is not the best translation and has several errors,But I am not very demanding and that the game can be played is more than enough Finally this installment is translated almost in its entirety I only recommend it because there is no better translation of this game
| Translation is not good, I can't understand the plot | joshua_graham5 | 2021-08-31 | Version 1.2 |
I played the patch and updated it to the latest version, but the translation is very poorly done. I'm grateful for the effort, the spells and demon names were done well, but the actual story script and NPC dialog is not translated well at all. At first it's not so bad, but after a while you can tell there's no proper context for the lines and you start seeing some mistakes. These mistakes keep compounding more and more as you progress through the story, until it ends up being an unintelligible mess at the end. I really enjoy this series, I played through Demikids and I really was looking forward to playing the precursor to it, Devil Children. I know the game is old and had many technical limitations as well, but no matter how I look at it the translation is not good. I beat the game and was able to do all of the side quests and didn't understand it, so then I went to someone's Let's Play of this game and they were able to explain the plot of the game much better than this translation patch.
| Honestly, this translation is garbage | GabrieliosP | 2021-07-24 | Version 1.1 |
This translation is, without a shadow of a doubt, absolutely garbage. I've beaten this game multiple times in the past, both GameBoy Color and PlayStation versions, and the amount of grave mistranslations I've seen in the early part of the game alone repulses me. There are not only lines that are mistranslated, but also entire lines that are missing. I would've given the team the benefit of doubt if their hacker was unable to add extra textboxes to the game, meaning the team was forced to choose which parts to keep... except that is not the case. There is one particular line of dialogue during a cutscene that was originally a single textbox, and has now been divided into two. They could have fixed stuff, but deliberately chose not to. The translator has admitted that all the lines were translated out of order and without context, and doesn't see any problem with it. If alarm bells rang inside your head from reading that sentence: congratulations, you have common sense.
| At long last! | Adventdemon | 2021-07-21 | Version 1.0 |
Man, god bless the community members who put in the time & work to translate the titles that never made it overseas. I can surely say that I wouldn't have been able to really enjoy & experience this game if the team hadn't taken the time to make this patch. I whole-heartedly Thank you for bringing this experience to the table for so many others to enjoy! & a BIG shoutout to all the dinosaurs of the scene for translating the majority of Megaten. W/o people like you out there most of these games would be left in obscurity to the western audience.
| It seriously needs work | Goznog | 2021-07-17 | Version 1.0 |
I greatly appreciate that there was effort put into making this, as I'm a fan of the games MIT and Atlus co-developed for the GB like Last Bible, but this translation is really poor. On the presentation and gameplay side it's acceptable, though the hacking done has resulted in the text needing to be trimmed down to fit. This could be acceptable on its own, but the script itself is FULL of translation mistakes that make the story and dialogue completely unenjoyable. Lines seem to be translated out of context and sentences were parsed completely incorrectly. The script trimming doesn't help either, with details being dropped so liberally that scenes will end up feeling strange or overly hard to parse. The errors in translation make enjoying the base information and plot beats impossible. As just one example, a line about an unknown human character "asking around about the demon king" of the realm gets mangled as them "helping the demon king". I'm almost certain some gameplay information is mistranslated, as well. Once again I really support the idea of translating this game and its sequels (let alone other MegaTen games), but the authors need to completely overhaul this patch to make it at all enjoyable. I hope that they can improve this patch in later revisions, and apply those skills to any future projects they take on.
