Translation description

Here it is the long awaited translation for Mobile Golf, the obscure Japan only Mario Golf game that once had online play!

The patch doesn't only translate the game, but it also changes the way things are unlocked in-game, so you can unlock the DLC (courses, characters, minigames and clubs) legitly without using any cheat device! Check the readme for more information on how to unlock content.

Translating this game has been a nightmare because Camelot decided to store almost everything as compressed graphics. It uses a compression algorithm that had to be cracked, then a custom tool for compression/decompression had to be built as well. Lots of texts are hardcoded as graphics (and compressed, of course), and some of them are duplicated and scattered several times across the ROM.

The translation is missing some Net Clubhouse (the online lobby) dialogs. But since the online service closed on 2002, these dialogs are not accessible anymore. However, there is a Mobile Adapter preservation project that could change this in a future...

Reviews

Highly RecommendedAqua2023-12-09Version 1.2b

A tremendous amount of hard work has been done translating this hidden gem of golfing gaming.

The translation is both functional and well-done, though it's a shame that the online functions no longer work. What is here can easily pass for a professional localization. The author went the extra mile and even translated the in-game glossary, which wasn't strictly necessary but is much-appreciated. In particular, the choice ot make DLC-only content available makes this the definitive way to play this game, even compared to the original.

Heavily recommended, especially if you liked Camelot's Mario Golf games.

Thank you so much!Instandhaltung2021-10-05Version 1.1

This game is actually as good as the first Mario Golf on GBC. The translation is good, although the description of the Courses is a bit simplistic. They might have been shortened due to space limitations. But all in all, the translation is well done and recommended :)
