I am just starting to get into ROM hacking. I have been dabbling in pixel art for a decades, and I did take a programming course in college, but I haven’t yet taken the plunge to figuring out ASM as implemented in an NES game. I have also been dabbling in music composition.

Most of my methodology so far has been through learning as much as I can about NES games in general, choosing a game that has at least some editing / design utilities, figuring out those utilities through trial and error (while documenting the entire process), reading the documents that are already available, changing some of the sprite / background tiles, and changing some hex values as I figure out what they do.

I do long for an improvement in my ROM hacking skills. There are times where I am recording, sorting, and manipulating hex values in a spreadsheet (and then inserting into a game to verify) and I think, this would be a lot easier if I was able to make a small whiz-bang program that does what I am already doing manually, but I feel content to learn bit by bit as I go for now.
