Best SMB level editor, but...Fei72024-05-27Version 1.5.2a

This is by far the simplest, best and easiest to use level editor for SMB I have ever used. It's quite literally taken SMBUtility and just improved on nearly every aspect in my opinion.

Now, I'm no expert in ROM-Hacking but I'll try my best to explain the issues I have with GreatEd as best as I can:

As another Review pointed out, it would be nice to have an option to make expanding the ROM size optional so we can use other tools without any issue alongside GreatEd.

Also when installing some patches such as new music, upside down pipes, etc the ROM just becomes un-openable or breaks with GreatEd which makes it difficult to use when trying to make more advanced hacks... (more advanced being literally just switching music apparently)

But other than that I've had a great experience using this editor, by far the best level editor for SMB out there. 9/10

Pretty amazing but room for improvment•.~°♪ BEEBO •.~°♪2023-08-27Version 1.5.2a

For the most part, this tool has supplanted the great SMBUtility as my preferred tool for level editing. It's definitely easier to use than probably any other level editor for ANY Mario game. And that includes Lunar Magic!

But it does have a couple of issues. For one, it would be nice to make expanding the ROM optional so people can design levels and still use other tools without any issue. Another is that it crashes when you try to modify the intro demo.

But overall, this tool is just about the best Super Mario Bros. level editor anyone could make.

Pretty niceAstroCreep2021-08-14Version 1.4.2

Complete beginner here, I dabbled with other editors in the past and none have been as easy for me to catch on to as quickly as this one. Managed to quickly re-add my old world 1 into a fresh rom with a few tweaks I added within minutes. Big plus is the cross compatibility with SMB2J for the exported areas feature - I can see this being useful in porting SMB hacks to FDS

One thing however I really recommend adding is a CHR import feature similar to SMB Utility, an ability to change the number of worlds (also like smb utility) and possibly a game text editor.

Great tool to create simple hacksnesguide22021-05-30Version 1.4.1

Great Editor to create simple hacks for Super Mario Bros.

  • + Simple in use
  • + Converts SMB Rom to different mapper that will allow you to create longer levels
  • + Shows if there are too many objects / enemies on current page
  • - Can't change limit of Worlds in game

THE best editor ever.Jeansowaty2020-07-12Version 1.3.1

SMB Utility? What is that obsolete junk? Don't even think of it when you have GreatEd. Much more flexible and easy to use, you can create all new levels and you can see if you add too many objects and the game won't render them. Miles better than other editors, although I should add that because it expands the ROM, it would be wise to FIRST add the patches, then edit levels, unless you have enough hex editing/asm knowledge. Deeply recommended!

Good for simple hacksgassug22020-05-03Version 1.3.1

I'm quite surprised this isn't as popular as SMBUtil. The way editing works is different albeit much more straightforward compared to SMBUtil. Adding and deleting objects opposed to replacing only, adding pages, etc. Definitely recommend, especially for beginners.

Great! Editor.Zerano2020-01-30Version 1.1

"GreatEd" More like Mario Great Editor! I found this in Mario levels more powerful than SMBUTIL, and I'm not kidding! Give it a try, these feature just made it a whole lot greater: Deleting and creating levels. Windows XP! Lets you run from your own emulator so don't have to worry about controls. Inserting pages and deleting and adding objects was more annoying opposing to just replacing like in SMBUTIL, but also makes GreatEd better. Try it out!

Nice editor. Not so advanced like SMB Utility but really useful. I'd like a new version with full SMB2J compatibility (Loopy's MMC3 ROM)

Doesn't emulate like SMB Utilityinsectduel2019-09-10Version 1.1

I have enjoyed using GreatEd and I think it's pretty cool to use and I think it's an extent to the SMB1 romhacking community. However I have complaints of why I didn't like it as much as using SMB Utility. Unlike SMB Utility, you can't swap enemies or objects you can only add or delete them. The features of the editor is cool such as editing warp zones, coins for 1-UP even the Spiny fall hacks but how can you miss the Bowser kill enemies feature for each world although you can extend by adding more enemies if you relocate the LDA address into free space.

What is incredibly annoying is that you can't open levels while a certain code reaches ram $6000 or $7000 (I have copied SMB2J items and change the RAM address to $F000 manually) based on the in-game objects or enemies. I also notice that the Loop Commands are re-written after you open the SMB1 original ROM and save it (make sure you uncheck read only) so I haven't got time to test the feature further because it can only load loops by area number which is great but I prefer the original SMB1 or SMB2J loop code.

The most part of the review is that GreatEd doesn't emulate SMB1 like with SMB Utility. If I install upside down pipes only SMB Utility can see it while GreatEd does not or other SMB2J related objects. This is an issue when making levels in SMB2J object style which can mistakenly read. For example, the Used Block (use for Firebars) in SMB2J is rewritten code but the Axe is shown on GreatEd which is the SMB1's object hex number OR if the SMB2J pipe used in underwater levels can reads the SMB1 flagpole in the editor but the positioning of the SMB2J pipe is at the top.

Overall, GreatEd should have its own emulator like SMB Utility but connecting your own Emulator is good too, but I prefer SMB Utility better.

Very Good, but Hard to Compete with SMB Utilitysegwayspeedracer2019-08-25Version 1.1

Starting off, the app is very good. It is interesting that... from what I can see... you can't change enemies like SMB Utility, but you can add and delete them. Overall, this gives more flexibility, but takes time to get used to.

The program needs to better label what styles to choose from. Style 1 being the island platforms, Style 2 being mushrooms, and Style 3 being bullet bills may not be obvious.

It is odd that it cannot open my current hacks, when SMB Utility can... which only has the Luigi Jump ISP and Reverse Pipes + Red Plant patches installed. I also did a lot of rearranging on pointers, enemies and block positions in those hacks. I am not sure which, if either, of these changes caused the program to fail to read my hack, but people should keep those things in mind that it may be limited on what games it can modify if people are hoping to stack patches.

Cool but an issueStudsX2019-08-17Version 1.1

Pretty awesome editor! I love how you can add more objects. Only issue bugging me is when you expand the ROM, a LOT of utilities and patches aren't gonna work. But I found a way to actually use other utilities so in the end it's awesome!

A great editor for this classic = awesome!Googie2019-07-24Version 1.1

This is a cool editor to have on you if you're into SMB hacking, I recommend this editor big time to anyone who wants to hack SMB. So what are you waiting for? Download it now, whee!
