Utility description
This is the most amazing SMB editor yet. Not only does it have full editing capabilities, it has an emulator built in so you can test the game from the exact point you're editing.Reviews

What to say? It's SMButil! The grandaddy of SMB1 hacking! This editor is very, very well done. It can do anything you want it to in regard of SMB level editing. Plus, it actually emulates the game for its level display, which means it still works great if you make other alterations to your hack, as long as they aren't too extensive. It does take a bit of getting used to, more so because of the way SMB levels are encoded than anything else (in other words, you'd have to get used to the same stuff with any other utility). Page skips and page flags namely can be very confusing until you figure them out. But SMButil will make you understand the way SMB levels are structured, which will ultimately benefit your hacking skills. Another thing that takes a bit of getting used to is that the English version does use some poor wording in places. You will have to get used to phrases such as "edit badguys", "green and tree", "island(cannon)" etc. But it's not much of a problem, to be honest after using SMButil as much as I did, I use that lingo myself in my head :) . As far as the features go, it really has practically everything you need when it comes to levels and level related stuff, at least as much as is possible without having to expand the ROM. Additionally, it lets you edit each object's hex encoding, which means sometimes you can make it do some stuff that were not even designed into the editor, as long as you are clever about it. What it does NOT support is adding extra objects, because, as mentioned, it is designed to work in the confines of the space designated for levels in the original ROM. SMB1 is notorious for how tightly coded it is and there's not even a byte of extra space in the ROM to add extra stuff. SMButil works within these limitations, which means, while it cannot add extra objects for you, it still allows all the other SMB utilities, as well as patches, to work flawlessly, which means you can simultaneously work on levels and graphics and code stuff or whatever you want to do. One feature I wish was there would be adding in room changes. You can edit the existing ones, but there is no easy way to add new ones. I can see why room changes are missing, as they take up three bytes of enemy object data unlike all other enemy objects which only take up two, and as previously discussed SMButil was designed to work within the original ROM's confines. There is a way to add them in, though, using the binary edit feature on an enemy object you can add an extra byte to it, which will overwrite the byte after that, thus making a valid room change object. But I wouldn't recommend doing this to anyone who doesn't understand SMB1 level encoding well, as it can mess up the later objects in the level, and possibly misalign the terminator byte so you'd end up with garbage enemy data. (The terminator byte can be reinstated the same way). In conclusion, this tool is great. Everything that can be done in regards to level editing without expanding the ROM can be done within this tool. It's incredible to believe the first version of this came out in 1999, and it's safe to say that SMB ROMhacking wouldn't be what it is today if it wasn't for SMButil.
| Really hard to use | Beacon | 2021-01-08 | Version 1.08/1.08i |
It's really hard to use and I am having a lot of trouble using it, there is little to no information on the Internet, and the pages feature it's really hard to use, really recommended but only if you know a lot about this program and Super Mario Bros. itself.
| "The" SMB editor | Teeporage777 | 2017-12-20 | Version 1.08/1.08i |
This is the best SMB level editor. It even has a semi accurate emulator as well. I love how easy it is to use this editor. You can switch between "modes" easily. The modes are object mode and enemy mode. You can even edit the text withing the game also. You can easily edit time, starting point, type of level, halfway point and so much more. This is obviously recommended. It is great and easy to use even for beginners. Give it a shot. You will get used to using it in no time and you will surely be happy you did.
